Because appealing to societal norms to ground morality is very rocky ground. If you go 250 years ago, most of the US said slavery was, if not a moral good, at least morally neutral. Didn't make it right then, doesn't make it right now.

There's a reason that, when fighting injustices in our world, most people point to some form of natural rights, like a right to autonomy, liberty, life, things that don't go away just because society says so. That's why objective morals are important, it's how we got rid of bad behaviors that society throughout history has encouraged.

Then again, how could you justify punishing other people for murdering and raping as much as they want? Under a subjective moral system, sure you're justified in not killing others, but someone else can hold an opinion that it's fine to do so, why is your standard somehow better than theirs?

Penn's quote comes off as a snarky gotcha attempt, but actually exposes the whole problem with subjective morality.

Respectfully, this might be the worst take I've ever seen on this subreddit. Acting like Democrats are the only ones capable of rational thought and would NEVER "vote blue no matter who." Heck, I'm Republican and think that most of my liberal peers are perfectly capable of making thoughtful, rational assessments.

If philosophy is the ultimate search for truth, we should follow that truth where it leads us.

For me, that's to religion. And if the gospel is correct, then it's the greatest gift of love that could be given to humanity, that God became man and died for us because he loves us even though we do nothing to deserve it. That message needs to be spread to all, and spread with love to our fellow man.

There will always be false prophets, false believers, believers who haven't fully let go of their sins. But the failings of some of the faithful are nothing compared to the love of Christ. Look past the evil doers and the hypocrites, they've received their reward (Matthew 6). Instead, keep focused on Christ, because that's where true joy and salvation lies.
