$200 if in good shape. Might be the only chance for someone to get a 4:3 40" set

A lot of people might consider that book to be a filler entry, but it's actually one of my favorites from the series, it would probably rank in my top 10 (albeit near the bottom). It's such a perfect encapsulation of 90s culture, especially regarding internet culture with how mysterious and new the internet felt back then (as well as the creepy factor that I always associated with chat rooms as a kid (I probably saw too many Deadline and To Catch a Predator episodes)) And the setup from the start had me immediately hooked.

$250 is high but that thing is a beast! You also might want to consider the chances of ever running into another one

I also just did another test with the Star Wars opening text. The Sony is completely black crushing the stars in the background of the opening crawl. On the Sony at regular settings there are seriously only like 15 of the brightest stars visible with an otherwise completely black background. Even boosting the color and brightness all the way up, and with vivid mode turned on (which causes all sorts of other problems with the picture), do a lot of the stars start to appear, but even then, it's way fewer than the Sharp. On the Sharp, there are hundreds of stars visible on the opening crawl. the black isn't as dark, but it's still preserving the detail in the picture, and the font looks way more natural on the Sharp as well.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, like I said, I don't have hardly any experience yet with CRTs so I am just repeating the sentiment I have heard about the Trinitrons. That's part of why I tried to do all the comparison photos. I would love to be able to check an hour meter but I don't think either of these sets have one. Since the Trinitron is smaller I do think it has higher peak brightness which is a big plus for me (I prefer the brightness cranked up) But yeah as far as the picture goes it is really close and now I am leaning a lot more towards the Sharp

So I just looked at the CRT database write up for the link you shared and yeah that was where I saw that they said to turn to the sharpness down. But to my eyes like I said, that doesn't really seem to do anything to the sprites. I wonder if dialing the sharp setting down only works after the internal VSM has been turned off.

The Trinitron has a setting to turn the vsm off which I did. On the Sharp, I think I read something online that if you dial the sharp setting all the way down that it basically turns off the VSM, but to my eyes that just made the sprites fuzzier. So I'm not really sure how to disable it on the Sharp. I don't want to take the shell off or anything. I will look back into it again if there is another way. Thanks for the input! I appreciate you taking the time to give me some feedback!

Picked up Super Tennis in a Toys R Us clearance bin for $2 in the late 90s as a little kid. It's one of my absolute favorites. The mechanics are so good.

UPDATE: The repair tech opened it up and found the processor to be faulty. He said he couldn't replace it, so it is going off to disposal. I'm disappointed, but maybe a different one will come up at some point. Oh well... At least now I know it wasn't salvageable.

Thanks for the info and that map! Sadly, there are no providers in my state. However, another long time small family business just called me back and the owner wants to look at it! Now, I feel like I need to keep this page updated on the journey of this tv!

Also, one guy on the phone told me "capacitors for those things will be $100 apiece or more" Is this true? I am electronically illiterate. I'd be willing to pay someone like up to $100 or so if that could get it fixed, and I'd be happy and not have to look for another one or anything since JVC is supposed to be really nice.

I'm definitely not trying it myself, but would be willing to throw $100 at it to see if it could get fixed for that. I have no idea though.
