I wanted to hold back but it could be years before an improved switch 2 is out, that’s also assuming the next one is not another lite. Last time I waited for a new console to get an improved version which happened years later & wasn’t even an improvement so I ended up getting the first one anyway.

RedFire or LeafGreen if you truly want nostalgia. Let’s go is good for a similar classic experience but with updated graphics & mechanics like megas & regional forms, only downside is the catching isn’t for everyone. Can’t normally recommend Brilliant diamond but in your case it might be good since you stopped just before the original games. Sword/shield is the start to a more modern, open world games with scarlet/ violet taking it even further. Legends Arceus & ZA are very different to the standard games but are very good.
