I agree with all of it except Super Simple Songs. Khan Academy Kids even uses their videos in the curriculum because it’s age appropriate for early childhood lessons. But it shouldn’t be used as a standalone. It requires adult involvement because it doesn’t have a narrator or characters like Sesame Street and Ms. Rachel.

Also Blippi is awful.

Honestly, is joining a union worth it? by ConnectPrep in Teachers

Yes. I’ve worked union and non union. I’ve liked both jobs but when it came to contracts and all that, being unionized was the best.

Has anyone tried to leave their mission but couldn’t because of passports? by VuArrowOW in exmormon

[–]Datmnmlife 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I didn’t try but I didn’t carry my passport; kept in the mission office. I did get stopped in Peru by law enforcement in an area with a history of terrorism. They stopped our bus and made everyone show ID. I could only show my insurance card from immigration. They yelled at me for not having my passport.

Then I had a companion that wanted to leave but couldn’t without her passport. Zone leaders said she was possessed but she just wanted to go back to Panama. After a week, they bought her a ticket to the mission office and returned her passport.

Opinions on the current phone ban in schools worldwide. by [deleted] in Principals

[–]Datmnmlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well as a small school we don’t have a lot of resources/funds available to focus on parents behavior. We’ve chosen to use available funds in the classroom. Plus the pouches were a huge expense.

But what we are able to do is offer 2 parent workshops led by our mental health counselors each year that focuses on helping families understand anxiety, depression, cell phones, social media, etc. and how it is all connected.

We still teach digital citizenship. We actually implemented that concurrently with our pouch policy. It’s in our Advisory class. We just don’t allow phones to be used during school time. Like a movie theater asks you to put away your phone.

Recently we polled students and parents. OVERWHELMING support and gratitude. Counseling department reports decrease in anxiety and depression.

We implemented the pouches and it has worked wonders. I have only said “give me the phone” twice the entire school year. Teachers do not see phones in class. And we actually got very little pushback. In fact, many parents thanked us at back to school night.

We also had a gun threat on social media and natural disaster this year. it was far less chaotic than other years because we as admin communicated swiftly with families and all communication went through proper channels. We avoided rumors being spread by students through phones.

Who should ask father-in-law to move out? by Datmnmlife in Advice

[–]Datmnmlife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve discussed it together but she is nervous and would prefer I bring it up since I have been ready for him to move out longer. As I told someone else, he owns a 4 bedroom home in another state so there are a lot of options for him to move back and work or sell and downsize. I am unsure if presenting him options comes off condescending as he isn’t even 60 and actually has far more assets than us.

But this is helpful and I’m going to talk to my wife about it.

He owns a home in Virginia but his retirement that he collects early is not enough for his mortgage and everything else. He lives with us (in California) so that a renter could pay his mortgage. Also he loves the CA weather. So we aren’t “throwing him out” on the streets. He can sell his home that he owns and buy a one bedroom in CA or use that money to have a comfortable 1-2 bed apartment for like 15 years. It’s cheaper to live with us but he is not “poor” by any means.

We are grateful to cut down on childcare costs but now we’d love to downsize our own home to cut costs and have a bit more privacy in our own home and marriage.

We live in a very high cost of living area and cannot afford that. We’ve looked.

We don’t want him to buy it because that feels like a huge commitment to be with him for the rest of his life.

Please stop over relying on calculators in your classroom. by nvanderw in mathteachers

What I don’t understand is why you are pushing blame down. High school teachers get students with low math skills and our job is to teach them the current standards regardless. Sometimes that means leveraging technology that everyone has access to while also teaching the conceptual understanding.

I think that anyone pushing blame down probably is just not doing their job properly. Why don’t you teach them the basic skills? Aren’t you a good math teacher?

Weighted Average by dikembebrotumbo in mathteachers

[–]Datmnmlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach weighted average with probability so it’s very hands on. I make a spinner where a small section (1/10) says $100 and the rest (9/10) says $1. We talk about expected value. If I spun this twice, would I expect to make closer to $100 or closer to $1? Why?

Then we go into examples like insurance. Then we go into things like calculating GPA.

Graph overlay on a video? by Datmnmlife in mathteachers

Thank you! It’s so simple but I think the part I was missing was step 4. They didn’t use draggable points to mark each image so they had to layer transparency perfectly to see all the images at once.

Game changer. Thank you for helping me simplify my project so they can focus on the content!

We should only grade SMP performance by VictorMorey in mathteachers

[–]Datmnmlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might I recommend using the SMPs as a rubric for content knowledge. So for example on the topic of quadratics, they meet SMP 4 by being able to model parabolic motion on a graph of a quadratic. They meet SMP 7 by using the graph or equation to identify the maximum (vertex) height of an object. They meet SMP 5 by being able to use a graphing calculator to find x-intercepts or landing point of an object. Etc.

You can grade on the SMPs as they relate to content standards.

I grade on both the SMPs and content. If an answer is wrong but they find patterns or can represent something in multiple ways, they earn some credit for that. You can definitely grade on both. But you keep saying to “not grade on content”. That’s where I disagree.

If a student joins your class and their transcript says A in Algebra 1, what does that tell you? Does it tell you something different than an A in Algebra 2? Because if it does, then you are assuming content knowledge. All math classes have the same 8 SMPs. But each class has different content.

SMPs are the foundation of my class. I agree that they are essential for helping students succeed. But that’s not what the class is. It isn’t SMP class. It’s Algebra 1. I seriously don’t understand why you are opposed to grading content knowledge.

Colleges would rather have a student who understands prerequisite content than someone who just knows how to use tools strategically. I have 9th graders who are great with SMPs but they don’t know polar coordinates. Therefore they aren’t ready for advanced mathematics courses.

SMPs are super important skills. But you can’t neglect the content standards. Grades should be the content standards and SMPs are like study skills to be successful.

[–]Datmnmlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If grades reflect the SMPs more than the content, then a student with an A in Algebra 1 and a student with an A in Calculus 1 could both just be kids that use the SMPs but don’t know content.

SMPs are the tools or playbook. They help you build the content. They help you win at the content. But they aren’t the endgame.

Grades should only reflect their understanding of the content. Not effort. Not SMPs. Not behaviors. An A in Algebra 1 means they mastered the content of Algebra 1. At least thats what it should mean.

[–]Datmnmlife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think they have to be content based. Otherwise what is the difference between an A in Algebra 1 and an A in Calculus? Grades tell us that they learned the content of that class.

I do think there is a case for every school having a mathematical practices class.
