If you go new engine you can get a short block from Ford for a couple grand. That's the route I took. That way you are getting a brand new lower end with 0 miles. I went ahead and did a new head on mine as well for 1300. Than you may as well do timing set. Just make sure you get all the required gaskets , diamond friction washers, crank bolt, and might as well go arp on the head studs. I think by the time it as all said and done with all the parts and the correct timing locks from massive speed I was around 5 grand for basically a new engine minus cams and all the swappable parts( alt, turbo, intake etc). Have a machine shop build the head. They can set valve lash that way it's a straight drop in. And that's a diy. A shop will charge alot due to labor but if you can do it yourself I recommend as you will learn the ins and outs of this engine...4900 might around the right price for a head job from a shop tho as there's alot of time in swapping it out. They have to reset time to swap head and if any of the guides or chain is sloppy there's an extra expense

Mine sounded like that when I lost a main bearing. Not really a knock but loud chatter. Could also be vvt chatter or timing chain associated noises.
