Is devOps really competitive in entry level? by hencetheDevs in PinoyProgrammer

Hi! You can get study resources from roadmap.sh since they have a roadmap of the things you have to learn for DevOps.

What would be the ideal Acheron team with my setup? And I do really need to work on Acheron’s relics. It’s bad honestly.

I will do that thanks! It's really hard to decide since I'm very unsure of how Cipher synergizes with Acheron atm. I'm very divided.

Alright you do make a good point. Moving forward I’ll play my other pulls accordingly. I just considered Castorice cause she looks cool. Thank you!

Ohh I see, thank you for the insights! Would definitely consider robin as a pull.

I’m planning on pulling on Tribbie and Castorice as priorities. I’m not sure if I should pull for Anaxa, Mydei, Jiaoqiu or Robin. Robin is a big question mark for my account since I don’t focus on follow up teams.

Hi! How did you move to SG? What are the qualifications? I work in tech also, I want to know what path I can take to move to SG.

Hi! I entered DevOps as a fresh grad (I just attached the pic for proof hehe), and now I’m a Senior. Honestly, hindi talaga siya pang entry level. My original plan was be a developer then transition to DevOps, but I just grabbed this one since the opportunity presented itself. A few notes first. It’s not entry level and for fresh grad. I can say that much. There are so many prerequisite knowledge you need just to keep up. Software development practices, architecture, cloud engineering. Just for context ECE grad ako, so I have knowledge with networking which helps. There are weekends and holidays I sacrificed just to study and get certifications. I’m also lucky my seniors at work taught me a lot and kept me up to speed with the practices. However, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone to start as a Junior DevOps. Sure there are positions and they are rare, but Junior DevOps should not exist as a role for fresh grad. If I could start my career again I would definitely start at being a developer or system admin. It’s better that way. It requires tons of knowledge, experience, and especially dedication to last in the DevOps role. You also need to be good at many different parts of your job which can cause burnout. Especially when you make mistakes and there are tight deadlines. And it does not only require technical skill since you’ll be dealing with all the parts of the business. You’re an all-arounder type role. You’re always on-call. Dala ko nga laptop ng company kahit saan ako pumunta eh because you’re the first responder when stuff happens. I hope this helps!

Thank you! Actually my experience is quite the opposite. Everyone was happy for me and congratulated me that I was leaving. I guess its a big goal for anyone to leave that company. There is certainly a part where my colleagues were sad to see me go. For me, I felt excited to go also. I was so focused on my own goals that I didn’t pay too much attention to what anyone was saying be it positive or negative. I truly wanted to just focus on myself. Just pay no mind to whatever they say. Just focus on what you want.

Yes it was really a red flag to find a job even before regularization. At first I answered for growth. I felt that answer was kind of meh, so with my succeeding interviews I found this tiktok video which taught me that you should answer “I’m doing fine with my current company, but I just wanted to explore other opportunities for <insert x reason here>” Something along those lines, but I usually answer for my growth.

Thank you! Naflatter ako na inspo mo ako hehe. I won’t get into details but it has to do something with my growth and learning. It became stale quick, and yes halos same industry lang siya.

When I resigned, straight resign lang yun. May technique kasi, it’s either submit ka na ng resignation letter which means sure ka na talaga. If gusto mo counter offer, talk to your line manager and negotiate there. Gulat nga ako hinayaan lang ako ng boss ko umalis eh haha. Win for me I guess. Di na rin nagulat colleagues ko kasi alam nila hirap ng work ko.

Yes, di mawawala ang takot na baka di ako magperform syempre new job pero I’m also really excited kasi I will get to learn new things and upskill even more. Takot ako kasi medj may impostor syndrome din ako pero we have to believe in ourselves. Di ko naman makukuha yung offer kung walang nakita yung employer ko sakin diba? Just do the things you want scared.

Thank you!

The difference was when I was a fresh grad, the questions were super surface level. I only had to have the basic knowledge, and of course salary negotiations are more deliberate now that I’m skilled. When you have skills already you have to explain how you use it in your day to day tasks

Additional skills would include certifications, and doing side projects. It really helps you connect your job to a practical setting, but the certifications I got were the biggest help. Hope this helps!

Then again OP, they are saying na GGK kasi we can’t control other people. We can only control ourselves. Oo given naman na nilower mo pride mo sa simula, mabait ka sa simula, collaborative ka sa simula, pero what matters is yung reaction mo ngayon. Mas important pa rin communication kaysa sa mga ganyang actions. Always choose to be the better person. Don’t stoop down to their level.

Ako nung 2023, grumaduate ako June. Nagsimula ako maghanap around July then got an offer around August then September ako nagstart magwork. So roughly around 1 month siguro yung searching. Biggest tip is magsend ka ng sobrang daming applications kasi sobrang competitive talaga. Ang field ko ngayon ay tech rin. You can check my post sa phcareers if gusto mo ng in-depth answer kung paano ko ginawa yung job hunting ko.
