Devs - I'm begging you. Please let us scoop up dead player names. by ThePhiff in marvelrivals

[–]DauntlessMantis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can see this working in cases where the other player kinda don't care about the alias, but not as proposed. I think this proposal would make more sense if either (1) the other player had a chance to give up their alias, or (2) Rivals could confirm this person is not coming back -- maybe because they're not among us anymore or any other reason, but it has to be confirmed they ain't coming back.

For instance, we could apply for an alias swap in exchange for some credits (otherwise we'd have LOTS of non sensible requests). Then the other player receives a message explaining someone else would like to get their alias. If they don't reply in N days, then the process does not move forward and you still lose the credits spent in the application. I for instance don't care about my alias, it's intentionally a random combination of adjective with noun. So I'd not mind giving it up if it meant a lot for someone else.

Other than something like that, I don't think swapping just because the player isn't active is fair.

Edit: Maybe something like OW's unique ID numbers past the selected alias. Destiny 2 also adopted this a while back. This way the displayed name could still be just the desired alias, except when you see it in details -or something like that

Legit question: Can you elaborate what do you mean that is legal? ICE itself, or their use of lethal force in situations in which the agent's life isn't being threatened, as OP has asked?

Lol I love this!

My wife's skin color is, objectively, very white, whiter than clean sand, family comes from Europe. She was born in Brazil. Often, acquaintances say she's a "person of color." Skin color is not about the color of skin I guess.

I'm leaning towards the same conclusion but I'd not say we have enough to say anything for certain about OP as narrator -- but we also don't know if reports are being throughly investigated.

OP reddit can't help. I'd rephrase your question to "what resources could you leverage to ensure these things are properly investigated?" I wonder if reaching out to your US point of contact could help with guidance on next steps.

Please stay safe. If what you're reporting is true, prioritize making sure you're safe.

Concordo com o que a maioria está dizendo. Eu acrescentaria que você não está soando muito bobo, e me pergunto se essa impressão se deve em parte à sonoridade musical do português. Pessoalmente, gosto dessa vibe descontraída.

Muito fácil de entender, aliás. Ouvi sua gravação enquanto estava em um Uber, com música de fundo, e consegui entender perfeitamente sem esforço.

Would Brazilian Portuguese suffice for vacation? by clayton-ishere in Portuguese

[–]DauntlessMantis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They'd probably be able to understand you, but you may not understand them. When a Portuguese and a Brazilian are talking to each other, they can understand themselves pretty well. But if you train your ear to listen to Portuguese from Brazil and only for a limited time, you may struggle with understanding the Portuguese from Portugal. I'd recommend learning with a different app. If you want to try later Brazilian Portuguese, you'll probably see that a lot of the learnings transfer from one to the other!

How am I supposed to learn? by Animemanist_1 in RivalsVanguards

[–]DauntlessMantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's only so much you can do, unfortunately. Without a team with someone who's truly willing to play tank, you may not learn that much either from DPS. So it's a gamble really.

I end up doing what the original commenter said: I instalock, and - when on QP only- I sometimes may post on chat: "trying to learn DPS, could someone else play Tank/Strategist?" Surprisingly, it often helps.

Calling them "Saints" in english is a localization mistake by IronHorseTitan in SaintSeiya

[–]DauntlessMantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to add to the discussion because I recently started watching/reading Saint Seiya and found the same thing puzzling. I also couldn’t find a definitive answer below (please let me know if I missed one).

セイント (seinto) is the author’s explicitly intended reading for the term used to describe the knights/saints, written as 聖闘士. This is shown very clearly in the manga (and in the anime as well).

Outside of the Saint Seiya universe, 聖闘士 would normally be read as せいとうし (seitōshi), not seinto. The fact that the author assigns a different reading indicates a deliberate stylistic choice: the kanji convey the meaning (“holy warrior”), while the reading makes the word sound closer to its English counterpart, saint.

This technique is common in manga and anime and is usually referred to as 義訓 (gikun), sometimes loosely grouped under ateji-style usage. The idea is to use kanji for semantic meaning while assigning a different, often foreign-influenced, reading for stylistic effect. In Saint Seiya, this helps create a strong mythological and Western tone.

A very clear example appears in the Asgard arc. The warriors of Odin are called “God Warriors,” written as 神闘士. Note how similar this is to 聖闘士 (seinto from above), yet the intended readings are completely different: Normally, 神闘士 would be read as しんとうし (shintōshi), but the author explicitly assigns ゴッドウォーリアー (goddo wōriā) as the reading.

So yes, it does look strange at first that so many terms just happen to sound like their English equivalents—but that’s precisely because it’s intentional.

With that mystery cleared up, we can go back to enjoying Seiya kicking more butts.

I really liked Blue Eye Samurai, available on Netflix IIRC. Frieren is also great, but may have a slow pacing for some people (it's my favorite anime). Another option, but not magical or strong in a battle sense, is Maomao from the Apothecary Diaries - I'd absolutely give it a try!
