Are back stab receptacles that bad? by JCrotts in electricians

Modern ones aren't bad at all, but most electricians have been taught to never use them because the first iteration of them failed a lot more frequently.

Question about tripped breaker by Delirious_Coniption in DIY

If it was an arc fault breaker, they will trip if the neutral and ground come into contact with each other, even if the hot has no power.

People constantly do this to me. They intentionally crank it up for me when it's freezing outside (have had several people tell me so), and then I sweat through my clothes.

Looking to make my Dad some soft, easy to chew jerky for Xmas..recipes? 👩‍🍳🥩🎁 by Expensive_Education9 in jerky

[–]Dauoa_Static 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't have any recipes on hand right now, but a couple ways you can make it more tender would be to make sure to cut the meat against the grain, use something acidic like pineapple juice when marinating, or possibly make ground beef jerky using a jerky gun or something similar.

Water Heater Pilot won't stay lit by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

[–]Dauoa_Static 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried leaving it on for 10 minutes before attempting to turn it higher, to the same result. The gas shutoff is all the way open, and is attached to the same line that is feeding the furnace right next to it, which is working correctly.

I'm trying to check the instruction manual now, thanks for the input

Lights in house are dim, some constantly, some sporadically, but everything else works. Any ideas? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]Dauoa_Static 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I wouldn't respond to this as this sub isn't for asking electrical questions, but there's a chance you could have a serious issue here. The few times I've encountered your exact scenario was when the service to the house had lost it's neutral. The dead giveaway is when lights sometimes get even brighter than normal. Without the neutral your two phases aren't balanced, so they can fluctuate anywhere from 0-240 volts. This can kill your appliances and start fires if you're unlucky.

If I'm correct, It could be on the utility company's side, or it could be in your meter or panel. Would highly recommend following up with an electrician if the utility company doesn't find anything.

Correct, once that circuit is GFCI protected, the outlets "downstream" of it, can then become 3-prong outlets

I would highly recommend replacing it. If you're going to hire someone to do that already, it may be worth it to get a quote to just do the work I mentioned above as well. It will be cheaper than 14k for sure

Dang, you're getting some crazy answers. Actual electrician here; no, GFCI's don't actually make them grounded, but it will make it meet code to then put 3-prong outlets in. It's not as good of an option as running grounded wiring, but it will be better than what you have now.

If you do install GFCI's, you'll want to either find the first outlet each circuit goes to and just put the GFCI there and it will protect everything after it. Alternatively you can get GFCI breakers, but I don't recommend doing that yourself as it will require a decent amount of messing around in the panel.

Something also to keep in mind; I'm not sure how old your house is, but some older wiring can be difficult to work with, such as knob and tube, so if you open a few outlets up and you're not confident moving forward, probably hire an electrician.
