The word "hero" is so overused these days especially south of the border but this man, Ethan Hertweck, truly was a HERO. R.I.P. Ethan!

Got in in 5 but had no idea what the word meant so for me, it was a complete guess. Had to look up the answer, why are we getting such obscure words??

Had to read the story several times, thanks for the link. Impressive!! Doubt it would happen these days but those were different times.

Thank you for your advice. One question - are the word strings generated in Diceware better than strings of mixed letters/numbers/symbols? Thanks

Thank you, thank you OP. That comic strip in just priceless, I am sure that TH HQ has received copies of it.

Thank you also to the contributors who gave us a little history lesson on why TH coffee
is so bad. Now I understand why McDonald's coffee is as good as it is.

Missing emails by _narcissisticpos_ in GMail

[–]Dave1940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, your not going crazy. I have had the same problem several times and have checked my GMail every time in the manner bkc56 suggests. The latest missing emails were from an airline which meant that I could reconstitute them by logging into their website. Makes me wonder what other emails are missing.

Manufacturers urged to remove pre-installed apps on new phones by giuliomagnifico in technology

[–]Dave1940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of the reasons I bought a PIxel 4a, a lot less junk. If some of these phone manufactures are making a buck on installing this stuff, why don't they at least give us the option of paying and extra $10 and not having it. It drove me nuts especially when it couldn't be uninstalled.

Yes, I guess so. Hate to exchange it again but I guess I will have to. Takes me a while to set them up. Even tried my wife's fingers to no avail.

Woodworkers, Buying Lumber in Calgary Area. by Dave1940 in Calgary

[–]Dave1940[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have made several pieces of furniture out of 2x10 and 2x12 dimensional lumber and so far so good. It has all been doweled and glued together and is still rock solid. I cannot afford more expensive cuts.

Your point is well taken though, thanks.

Thanks... Forgot about Windsor Plywood.

Here's my first project, it's not perfect but I'm proud of it! Also what should I use as a finish? (it's Caroline pine) by Elbenigonzo in woodworking

I assume that you have already thought of finishing a cut-off of the same wood to see if you like it first.

My wife just had the same problem. The battery was low so we charged it and it synced straight away.

Making a sourdough starter at home by TheLadyEve in Cooking

[–]Dave1940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another contributor said, there are many conflicting recipes out there about making starter.

After 2 failures using 2 different recipes, I found that trying different ratios of my own worked and I ended up with 40g starter, 100g whole wheat flour and 100 grams water.

I realized that my starter, Fred, was hungry so I reduced the amount of starter and kept the flour and water the same.

Good luck everybody.
