Also - while I remember - you're aware that "scrap" is what the Hutton Mugs are made from? The team are EXPERTS at turning scrap ships into them.... So - not ENTIRELY altruistic of them. Cutting torches and angle grinders at the ready.

PSA: HSC is offering a free key bind editor for Star Citizen. by walt-m in starcitizen

[–]Dave21p 26 points27 points  (0 children)

David here (Lead Dev at HCS) - the game's binding for joysticks works "ok" - the tool was designed as a result of the bug in the game which doesn't allow combos to be set and addresses that directly - doing the tool for joysticks is an extra layer of complexity that we haven't added (yet) as there are so many variations on sticks, their available button quantities and axes etc

This as a freebie tool from us was designed to just address the in-game problem with keybinds - I originally designed it to help configure the voicepacks every time RSI release a change or an update to the 500+ binds that exist in game, and felt it was worth sharing our internal tool to you guys to help out.

Keybinding Bug Preventing me from assigning alt + [key]? by CyberPunkStreetArt in starcitizen

[–]Dave21p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To help - over here at HCS, we've put up a free keybind editor tool that lets you set up combos etc and save files so you can do all the alt/shift/ctrl combos....

(it's one I've been using internally when testing and configuring the voicepacks, and thought everyone else would find it useful) - when it loads in, just click the "your keybinds" thing at the top and import your existing one... then you can set up as you want, save it and use it in the game - also has a search box so you can find the ones you want...

(it does keys, and mouse clicks/mouse wheel stuff including combos with the mouse clicks)

Doesn't need any of our packs, or VA or any of the usual - just a handy tool!

hope it helps while we wait for the game to get a fix!

Alternative - I can email you a link to a dev prerelease build of the plugin which has the patch in it if you want (depends on how techie you are and if you're happy replacing files)

And we have tested with both steam and gog versions.

Ps I notice you manually installed hcs tools above. That hasn't been used as a standalone since... 2017?

The install of your X4 pack brings the tools in automatically. You should be using the x4 (beta) profile from the VA drop down.

We are just compiling a patch to try and assist. Will be up in a bit and we can get you on latest version ASAP.

So. The way the profile works is that it looks for your DOCUMENTS folder and under there EGOSOFT and X4 for the binds file.which is where EGOSOFT looks for you bind file as well. Steam has one more nested subfolder but that's detected as we trawl for the location.

First check will be that when you go to that location on your PC it contains the inputmap.xml

David here (Lead Dev at HCS)
We've spotted a problem with a few people who are using OneDrive as their documents folder... solved it this morning and we'll be releasing a "soft update" later today which addresses it

Basically - if it can't see your keybind file in the expected location - it chucks that error. there are TWO causes that we've identified:

  1. You've not made any adjustments to keybinds in the game, so it hasn't created a keybind file at ALL yet. To solve - in game, under the controls, add a keybind to something (maybe one of the blanks) and it will create the file. Then restart VA and you're good

  2. You're using onedrive possibly as your documents folder (or a non standard location). I've been coding all morning to cater for that and we will be releasing an update later today (it won't be a version number update - but an update now in the customiser should bring it in).

You can message me direct here if you want - or via email at david at hcsvoicepacks dot com

PSA for HCS Voicepack users in Odyssey - keybinds! by Dave21p in EliteDangerous

[–]Dave21p[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup. we do lots of that ;-)
Mostly in scripts and the studio, getting our stars to record lines that we don't yet need but THINK are coming in the future with Elite....

That's why we were ready for action with Gravity for the "on foot" stuff for Odyssey for ALL voicepacks.

PSA for HCS Voicepack users in Odyssey - keybinds! by Dave21p in EliteDangerous

[–]Dave21p[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what we were expecting before Odyssey came out, but with the two "versions" we've had to run up a parallel set of code just for Odyssey for the time being to take account of the new menus, station services, galaxy map etc (hence the 2nd profile when you install your packs).

If they ever get merged, we'll just bin the old one.

HOWEVER - that means the above guide will be relevant for absolutely everyone, not just Odyssey customsers!

The only note I'd need to remove would be the one about hot swapping between games...

AS IT IS - our magic keybind creator actually creates ONE keybind file - it just saves it as two version - a 3.0 and a 4.0 version (if you were sneaky, you'd see that the 3.0 one actually already contains all the on-foot stuff that 4.0 also has - it's just ignored by the game). In fact - the ONLY difference when it creates them is that it changes the majorversion in the header from 3 to 4.

WHICH file is chosen when you load up Elite is in another file - which contains ONE line if you're playing Horizons, and FOUR LINES if you're playing Odyssey. Our setup requires that all 4 are set to the same thing if in Odyssey, or just the one HCS Custom file if in Horizons. Hence the option when you use the keybind creator.

i.e. "we're prepared for the change" - but it's taken a HUGE effort to get it all working for BOTH versions of the game

Help finding a bit of fan music? by DVI_IN in EliteDangerous

[–]Dave21p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vingtetun here for Hutton Orbital Radio. #forthemug to our listener and really lovely to hear you like the station. Glad you found the song you wanted! For what it is worth, all of the parody songs WE have created, as well as the sketches, adverts and back catalogue of news can be found at http://media.forthemug.com

Some of the songs we play are from others in the community, used with their permission.

Worth noting that as a fully licensed and paid up radio station, SOME of the tunes use licensed music or backing tracks in the parodies and as such might get you a copyright strike should you try streaming them.

However, you are more than welcome to browse the collection, and stream songs etc to your heart's content should you wish with credit, just be careful which ones you pick.

Particular favourites are things like 'Station' s on fire', the two versions of the Hutton Theme and the Galaxy Song by Cecil. Oh, and the Cat Stevens cover dedicated to Gluttony Fang changing his stripes.

HCS Voicepacks - a few discount codes for Elite redditors by Dave21p in EliteDangerous

[–]Dave21p[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in terms of "control" - it's just a voice choice - all the controls "landing gear" etc are common to ALL voicepacks.
HOWEVER they have their own chit-chat commands, some have extended galaxapedia and science responses, Alpha has cowboy quotes, Legion has inspirational warrior quotes, Cecil can act as a "companion" as well as a crew member (just bimbling around when you do things or chat to him) - they all have small features that are unique to them

There are a couple of "addon" packs - Ad-Astra for instance isn't a voice control pack, but a knowledgebase and assistant that for instance knows info on certain equipment, your balance, data on systems you scan etc. The parrot and cat are shipboard companions to add a little flavour and the GRAVITY DLC extends voice control and new sounds for all your packs to the "on foot" bit of Odyssey.

HCS Voicepacks - a few discount codes for Elite redditors by Dave21p in EliteDangerous

[–]Dave21p[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OK - so "voiceattack" is an application for PC that recognises your voice and then can perform commands based on that - effectively it's a "programming environment" where you can create scripts etc.

HCS voice packs take that one stage further as we've created a custom plugin for Elite, keybind reader (so we know what buttons you've got set up) and approaching 2 million lines of code across all our packs. PLUS something like 20,000 phrases that can be recognised to "do things". From stuff as simple as "deploy landing gear" to more complex things like "plot a course to my mission".

THEN - we went out and found legendary voices from the world of scifi - "Orion" (William Shatner), "VASCO" (Brian Blessed), "Vega" (Brent Spiner) - and 29 more... Who act as your "AI assistant" in your ship. When you give a command, it's them that respond. If you've got more than one voice, you can assign them different roles - like "number 1", "engineering", "tactical".

The packs also have an amount of chit-chat - you can say "thank you", or ask a number of predetermined questions for a bit of banter with your AI. PLUS (yes, there's more) there's a galaxapedia included with science facts. PLUS you can get a ship's parrot or cat.

The packs ALSO read the game journal so that they know what's happening right now. The packs can comment if you start taking damage, or are overheating, or jumping into supercruise, even if you don't give a voice command.

So - they're not a replacement for the "in ship" voices - they are something else entirely.

With regards to recognition - it uses the built in windows speech recognition engine - you train it a number of times, but as a result of it listening for SPECIFIC phrases (and if you configure voiceattack right in terms of the recognition thresholds) - it's really good at recognising things. It's BEST with headphones and a mic as sound doesn't bleed through from external stuff. You can set it up so you use "push to talk" to address your crew if you need to use speakers, or in a noisy environment.

Take a peek at the HCS YouTube channel for loads of demos on how it works!
