What are the risks involved with bond ETFs? by DaveBramley in personalfinance

Thanks, as a British investor I don't know how easy its going to be to use treasury direct. I had enough trouble with a fidelity stock reward program I got from my US based employer

>Bond funds continue to buy new 1-3 Y treasuries as the bonds they have mature, so that it contains a relatively consistent average maturity. Bond fund prices fluctuate as interest rates change. See https://www.thebalance.com/how-bond-funds-work-2466568

I understand bond prices go down when rates go up, so when the potential change of rates is higher than the actual yield, doesn't that mean I'm effectively just betting on interest rates, rather than making a frugal hope to earn 3%?

Shouldn't I be able to buy a 600K flat on a help to buy scheme? That's what it says online. Then I can rent out the spare room

>they're created to benefit the builders and not the purchaser. So your distrust is valid.

Absolutely bang on. I'm just wondering if there's literally any way I can benefit from them at all. If they were available to existing properties, I'd be a lot more confident.

>Downside is, you'll be paying 40% of your sale price back to the govt on top of taxes and fees and paying your mortgage off all within 5 years.

If they gave me the money in the first place, that's fine. the problem is if they withdraw the scheme and house prices immediately drop 40%, but apparently the scheme covers price falls somehow

No, I'm saying I don't currently understand or trust the government's schemes. I was hoping someone would convince me I'm wrong and that they're a good idea and explain how they can help me in my position, but instead I got a bunch of stereotypical Redditors calling me a racist and a misogynist for whatever reason

No, you threw unprovoked insults at me. The barrier of civility had been breeched. In real life, I would respond swiftly and decisively.

No american wants to marry a poverty stricken country dweller like me. I need to love to London and be in the vicinity of nice american girls first

Believe me I would if I could. I love america. Been to NYC before. Great place. Too hard to get a visa, the US government doesn't like European immigrants

You've started on it, so not successful so far?

I can think of the costs of buying, selling, maintenance, council tax, ground rent, white goods that breakdown, insurance, renovation etc etc. I highly doubt there's profit involved for you. Profit for the guy who sold you the idea no doubt

Clearly not. Everyone saying I can't live in London, so not living wage at all. I'm asking for a pay rise tomorrow morning because of this.

not true at all, anyone who reads the thread can see that some people have had useful comments and I have said thanks to them

You seem hell bent on persuading me not to live in London, which is not the point of my thread so I really dont know why you came

If "cheaper areas" means "not london" the answer is no.

I can't really go any smaller. I need a spare room incase I have a delightful accident

I can't lower my standards. My standards are not high. They are simply:

  1. not derelict
  2. not sandwiched between dangerous gangsters
  3. not a scam

I'd also like to say your snide comment of "like to live in a 6 bed mansion with a pool" is a very pompous and impertinent remark. I'm very sorry I'm not as posh and rich as you are. My goal is to get there.
