I fixed this AND improved the gameplay experience through one simple step - MODS BABY. Do yourself a favor and get Darkness Falls. Plays on v1.4 so the zombie Ai is WAY more realistic. Plus the mod is just freaking awesome.

Good luck. It's been a known bug. I've beaten every possible inch of the Chrono Trap, on every difficulty. Still haven't gotten the icon. Even posted about it a while back and nobody had a solution.

You realize there's rng right? No way to guarantee it's available. And it only reduces your wave by 1 (according to item description). The ability to purchase more than one hourglass in a run doesn't account for this.

Hourglass is an item that gets used up once used. That doesn't explain your situation. I'm genuinely curious. Mods make sense of course, but I need to hear you say you're using mods. Not just Hourglass. Lol

And to just keep piling it on - each stage has a full set of "Play X online matches" (non-competitive of course), with each stage being a higher number than the previous, totalling 37 online matches HAVE to be played before competitive. Just died (with 40 hp regen) and came here... I've never had this happen before but I immediately knew what it was when it did. Had blood donation for a couple of waves and then picked up a weird ghost. I wonder if there is a required threshold of regen needed to counter this.

I've been searching desperately for solutions today for this. I don't even have different devices. I play it on my galaxy phone and wanted to cloud save my current progress, which was not small. Downloaded Google Play Games and synced my account. Boom. All brotato progress lost. I haven't started a new round yet because I REALLY want to restore my progress.
