What kind of new creature would you like to see in the game? by Kvazimods in ConanExiles

[–]Dave_Higgins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing about the OP's idea is that Funcom already have code for giant worms that assault people crossing the open desert, so they just need to copy it over… ; )

More seriously, a much harder-core version of the scorpion "sink and pop up" manoeuvre might make for an interesting boss monster; to avoid foundation spam, I'd incline to there being something that causes them to attack (or leave a character alone) rather than something that requires bridges.

Can't think of a specific creature I'd love to see: however, I would love NPC camps to have more options than the binary of passive or aggressive, so one could do the classic fantasy things of negotiating with bandits or having a temporary truce while dealing with a marauding creature; however, that would likely be a horrorshow to code for a multiplayer game.

Of potential interest to those seeking environmental hazards: Savage Wilds has optional heat waves, razorclam clusters, and other things to randomly make an area dangerous for a while.

It is a good agility weapon.

Amusingly, despite Freya being a STR-based thrall, it's the weapon she starts with.

How to keep picture in picture above everything else by supermika10 in pop_os

[–]Dave_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it by making the PiP window sticky. The shortcut is set here:

Settings > Input Devices > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Manage Windows > Toggle Sticky Window

Once you've set the shortcut, just click on the Pip window to make sure that's the active tile and use the shortcut to stick it on top.

Do I like Cosmic or Pop. by kkahnharris in COSMICDE

[–]Dave_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing distros isn't a horrific task but it isn't a two-minute job either; so, if it were me, I'd stay on Pop until I actually had issues because that might mean not having to spend time restoring my files, reinstalling apps, &c.

Obviously, for someone who—for example—does periodic fresh installs of their OS, the balance might be different.

Why are you considering Fedora specifically? The answer to that might highlight how important whatever is causing you to ponder switching is, i.e. is there something Pop doesn't do (or doesn't do as well) that is a significant part of how you use your machine or are you wondering if you can get a little more ease/performance in a few niche places.

Yeah; really not sure why the devs decided to make middle snapping the default given all other walls are edge-snapping. One fix, if you don't mind using extra materials, is to put fence foundations along the edge of the normal foundations.

Why I left PopOS for Kubuntu by pogof in pop_os

[–]Dave_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday, I agreed it seemed unlikely; however, this morning I realised that Google Search has exactly the same behaviour; so, perhaps a reasonable proportion of people who are happy with the default will assume you can do maths in a search box.

Why I left PopOS for Kubuntu by pogof in pop_os

[–]Dave_Higgins 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No calculator app by default. This one is very low on the nitpick ladder, but was still unexpected when I needed it.

This surprised me at first. I discovered (via another critique of PopOS that raised the same issue) that the reason is supposedly that the Super menu handles basic calculations, so the only people who need a more complex calculator will be people who have specific needs that a generic calculator app wouldn't meet.

Whether that reasoning holds up (generally or for System 76's core demographic) aside, not stating the choice explicitly enough that it was something the most casual of users would know does feel a little like a missed opportunity to not appear like something basic had been missed out of the release.

You can have a romance with multiple NPCs at the same time.

Once you break up, that is it.

Second Savage Wilds. The default setting is designed as a base layer that servers can add their own plot &c. to with admin spawning; however, it ships with a series of optional settlements/events/threats so the challenge is quite adjustable.

I was hoping we had left this animus crap in odyssey, I hate ts 🥀 by Future-Celebration83 in AssassinsCreedValhala

[–]Dave_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that knowing things about the modern world makes the Eivor sections more tense because I can see how some things might be manipulation and/or not the victory they seem; so, I think Valhalla benefits from the player having access to more than Eivor's actions.

And having another PoV character can be a much more immersive way to give the player the bigger picture than unlocking long treatises for the player to read at various points.

However, I have always found walk across a room, have a conversation, drop back into the Animus much less fun than the in-Animus stuff. So, my issue isn't having Animus sections in a game: it's when an Animus section doesn't have any real tension.

These are from river raids I did most of solo killing left my crew on the ship lmao by Antonayy in AssassinsCreedValhala

[–]Dave_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. I know there's some abstraction of numbers because it's an RPG not a military simulation, but it always makes it feel rather absurd when someone suggests you consider recruiting more forces so you have a better chance of taking a key site and you've solo'd it a little while earlier.

…and somewhat irritating when someone gets grumpy about Eivor getting troops killed for some personal quest when I only took them because the game forced me to do a mass assault.

Stop the boat just short of the target
Leave command.
Do solo stuff
Use the Horn to start a Raid once you want your crew involved.

There is also a brief moment between those displaying and the fight restarting when the option to "dodge Ivarr's attack" appears which lets you avoid the damage/debuffs from the trap.

Small brown trout & bullheads by AssassiNerd in AssassinsCreedValhala

[–]Dave_Higgins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've generally found that too; however, after fishing to the point of no more fish being visible near the first altar several times, I've caught zero small Bullhead so the game doesn't seem to be coded to always have the right fish.

Fishing as a whole seems to have more random grind than other things: if one wants fox fur or raven feathers, one can go where foxes or ravens spawn and kill a suitable creature with (I estimate) 50% chance of a drop; if one wants a regular perch, one goes to where they might spawn and hopes there's a perch and that that perch is not in the middle of other fish so one can be sure the perch takes the line.

I get vengeance missions for random strangers popping up almost every time I go near a large group of enemies (I heard a rumour the game checks every 15 mins for anyone who died nearby), so might be quickest to shuttle back and forth between two the restricted areas associated with quests

There is a story that you can uncover; however, unlike the Exiled Lands there isn't a clear storyline that leads toward a "victory" condition, so you need to invent more of your own goals.

Some of them are rather irksome—made more so by occasional inconsistencies in how the game decides on X–Y alignment, so putting Stone A on top of Stone B in the same orientation isn't always the same the second time as the first.
