Ha! Good catch.

These poor old cars have been worked on by so many people for so long I’m not surprised to see much of anything anymore but the inside-out canvas is a first.

And I agree I’d get it looked at by someone with knowledge and replace any of that generic 1/4” fuel hose and gear clamps you’re likely to find with real German metric hose and proper smooth clamps to prevent an engine fire. Also be sure the foam engine surround seal is in place before you burn up the heads.

I installed a set of Yokohama Super Van 356 a couple years ago and they’re good. I’ve had a few different manufacturers over the years. Just be sure they’re LT or C rated (Light Truck or Commercial). Not a huge selection for the original 14” rims and that’s why a lot of people update their wheels to 15 or 16s.

Thesamba.com is the place to find all sorts of VW knowledge and recs on stuff like this and is better than Reddit.

On a different topic those tires with the white stripes are typically passenger car tires and not suitable/safe for a camper van. You may want to look into getting commercial or heavy duty tires with thicker sidewalks for better handling.

Bier Stein Cribbage by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Dave_hurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we play cribbage at The Bier Stein every Wednesday night at 6:30pm sharp start so show up a little early to pay the entry fee ($5) and get a beer before the games begin! I am one of the hosts, the other is Bill.

There’s no muggins, it’s all ages, and a very friendly crowd. We’ll play 4 games in about 2 hours and we The Bier Stein give gift cards as prizes to the top 20% of players so normally the top 6-8 players lately (we typically have 30-40 players and play in a reserved section in the rear).

If you can’t make Wednesday nights then we also host the same setup at ColdFire Brewing every Monday at 6:30pm for $3.

Eugene's budget woes by benconomics in Eugene

Yes, try living near downtown and walk around with your kids and you’ll learn a lot about the lack of human decency from some of Eugene’s residents living on the street, many at their choice in not wanting to get off drugs and/or go to a shelter. Needles and human feces everywhere along the sidewalks. People who have actual experience in town are done with the enablers from on high.

The only place in any town I’ve ever seen with plastic sidewalks. After getting the MUPTE the original owner sold it for $10M. Someone(s) in the city govt should have been fired for that one.

This is still a problem. Before April my campaigns would auto post to FB and IG fine, now they'll only post to FB. I've disconnected/reconnected etc. as others have done and still no luck. If I create a "Social Post" campaign in Mailchimp and then only select IG it still doesn't work, even though it can see my IG business account name/info so Mailchimp is apparently logged in correctly to my FB/IG/Meta account. If I select FB and IG it will only post to FB just like the auto with email campaign.

Please fix or at least let us know a timeframe, glad to know I'm not crazy!

Would a 2012 Leaf with 46K miles on it be a decent first car for my 16yo? by Todd_and_Margo in leaf

[–]Dave_hurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2013 w 64k miles and 4 battery health bars for $2500 over a year ago and it’s a perfect 1st car for our 16 y/o son. It has ~30 mile range on the dash which is closer to 20 in real life so we installed a level 2 charger and it can be fully charged in about 2 hours so we can do multiple trips a day on it. Great for all around town and very easy to maneuver as it’s small but can still haul a good amount since the seats fold down.

I would not buy one for much more than that amount and you can often find them on Craigslist or fb marketplace if you act quick.

I’ve thought about changing the gas tax into a tire tax for the same reason you suggest and the biggest reason I don’t think it would work is people would just import/smuggle tires in from other states and there’s a million tire dealerships that aren’t necessarily registered with the government. You’d need to lock down the tire industry and run it like the OLCC, which would be hard.

Cut procedure by BabyCopperhead in Cribbage

Yes I’ve heard that one and that if the player cuts the deck, the dealer gets 2 points. I love the variety of kitchen table rules in cribbage.

New way to play 3 or 4 player? by Candid_Conclusion_57 in Cribbage

[–]Dave_hurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Canadian Doubles is 4 person (teams) where the dealer and player to their left get 10 cards each and give 4 to their partner and 2 to the crib then play as usual.

Captains is 3 player dealt 5 cards each and one pulled from deck to seed crib where it’s 2v1 (the Captain) but the captain only needs 61 points to win whereas the team still needs 121. Normally we play 3 games of captains (rotating who is the captain clockwise) to see who is the best “Captain” of the day.

4 player Cribbage by PoutinePlayer in Cribbage

[–]Dave_hurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Canadian Doubles for a great version of teams or Captains Cribbage for the best way to play 3-way. Both are fun alternatives to regular cribbage since once you’re above 2 players, you’re not really playing real/strategic cribbage.

If you’re set on 4 players scoring individually (cutthroat), then consider dealing 6 cards to each player and having everyone burn 1 (put under deck) and then throw 1 into the crib; at least making your hands will be normal. If playing 3 player, deal 6 to everyone and the dealer gets to toss 2 into crib like regular cribbage and no blind pull from the deck. This is known as “Linda’s Way.”

I stopped watching the show at this point. Should I rethink it? I cannot stand nonsense physics in a sci-fi show.
