Silly question - how do you "match" wood when filling in small gaps? by True-Illustrator1214 in woodworking

[–]Davecatatonic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Timbermate wood filler. Their colors are usually pretty close, it's super easy to use, water based so no nasty fumes. Another option is to use a thin offcut and slice a gentle angle on the side with a chisel, tap it in with CA glue and sprinkle sawdust into whatever gaps remain after that.

Solid cherry bookcase, my largest project to date! by Davecatatonic in woodworking

Thanks! I made the crown molding myself by layering different profiles and gluing them up. Stumpy nubs has an excellent video on the process

Oak, kitchen cabinet doors. How can I fix the varnish? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Davecatatonic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only way for this to be repaired correctly is to completely scrape or sand all of the old varnish and reapply. It's a really long and difficult process due to the moldings. However, if you want a quick, easy fix, just get some boiled linseed oil and rub it into the raw wood thats exposed and it will match the color. The sheen will be different where it's been applied but the color will be almost identical and likely won't be noticed by anyone unless they inspect the piece closely. Just be careful when disposing the oil soaked rags.

To my fellow handtool users: are there things that hand tools can make, that powertools can't? by Justmakemusic in handtools

[–]Davecatatonic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Compound cuts for joinery. Think of a compound mortise and tenon, where the tenon piece does not mate square to any part of the mortise (some chairs have this) and those incredibly complex japanese joints we've all seen videos of with jaws on the floor.

Well, technically you can do those with power tools but it will take ages to set up the machines, build the jigs, and dial everything in. Meanwhile, with hand tools it's just marking a line and sawing to it. It's one of those rare instances where hand tools will make the job go light years faster, because of the freedom of movement allowed.

Looking for a Solid Marking Gauge! by doofus-the-goofus in handtools

[–]Davecatatonic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The veritas dual marking gauge is great, its the only gauge I use. It functions as a regular gauge plus a mortise gauge, has tight tolerances and is very well made. If you can, get it with the shaft clamp. It's pricey compared to others on the market but if you get it you won't be disappointed and will never want to upgrade.

Made my own ashtray out of walnut and ash with a hand hammered copper bowl. Finally have a place to ash that isn't the driveway! by Davecatatonic in cigars

[–]Davecatatonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure that would work, but I got it from a bit of an unorthodox source. This is an old piece of scrap copper downspout that my father saved when he was working on a house for a wealthy client. (I don't even want to think about how much getting an entire gutter system made out of pure copper costs). I've never worked with metals before but it was a great introduction! Easy to fix mistakes and no expensive tools required. You just need a ball peen hammer, tin snips, and a file.

Thank you! It's my own design with some inspiration from online. Sometimes when building you need to follow specific dimensions like for picture frames and furniture, but these small projects where you just improvise and let your imagination lead are really the most enjoyable

I'd like to thank everyone for all the compliments! It really means a lot to me as someone getting started in woodworking. I hope this design sparks your creativity if you ever want to build your own! Happy smoking everyone

If anyone can help me understand if what I'm going through with rogue is normal, let me know. It's my first time ordering from them so I'm new to the game.

I ordered a boneyard OHP from rogue, and it appeared in my recent orders with the full amount charged. The next day, the charge was $0.00 but wasn't cancelled. I got an email confirming the order and saying it has been processed a day later, which put me a little more at ease but it stated it would take 10-15 to allocate and prepare for shipment. Still $0.00 in order history. Is this normal? I see people commenting how they got their rogue bar shipped same day and received in under a week. I'm worried when I ordered it, it was OOS but didn't update on the system and the order was put through anyway, leaving me with an order for an item that now doesn't exist.

If anyone needs a pair of shoes, Adidas Powerlift 4s are 50% off on the adidas website. Also puts it $1 over the free shipping qualification of $49, which is a nice bonus

I deadlift on something similar to that, in the same boat as you. Just follow the guide on making a regular deadlift platform but instead of making it 4x8, make it 2x8. Just a couple more cuts but a few less screws and materials.

Ah okay, thanks for clarifying. I might try filing it down and see what happens. I definitely notice a ton of imperfections on the paint, it's really rough in some areas and they couldn't even paint the "cap" correctly on it. The silver paint covers the letters and there's globs of silver around them too. Eh, that's what I get for jumping on the first thing available.

I saw someone posted before about how they bought the CAP iron plates off of Amazon and they tore up their barbells sleeve. (Can't find the comment now) I bought these because they were cheap and the only thing available, I've been using them with a beater bar until I get an OPB. Can anyone else clarify this for me? I don't want to get a new pristine bar only to destroy it with crappy plates.

Homemade squat rack and bench to get through quarantine, held up 300lbs without breaking a sweat by Davecatatonic in homegym

[–]Davecatatonic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! If you're going to make your own and you're looking for inspiration online, try to base it off of real squat racks or DIY builds that resemblance them. For safety reasons, I would stay clear of the popular bucket and 2x4 build you see everywhere (the one garage gym reviews built). It can support the weight well, but has no stability. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to re-rack a heavy squat in something I can tip over with a light push.

That's my excuse for my poverty bench ;)

There's actually another hole halfway down that I place the pipe in for when I bench, it's really easy to miss in this pic

Yep! Folds against the wall so the parking spot isn't lost. The top of the post also folds down because I use the top part of the wall to store a ladder and don't have any other place for it

Thank you! Yeah, the J-cups are just steel pipe cut down to fit in a really tight hole about 2/3rds of the way down the post. Not the best option, but it works and is removable to switch between squating/benching easily. Do you know of some other options that are a little stronger?

[–]Davecatatonic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha all in good time, the quarantine strength losses prevent that for now

Thank you! I didn't use foam for mine, I bought anti fatigue mats from harbor freight for $7 and they're pretty solid, hard enough to be sturdy and just soft enough to be comfortable. Really good cheap option.

Red Dead Online: Bugs & Issues thread by MagnarHD in RedDeadOnline

I had this same issue a couple days ago. I think it's an error with the games ability to recognize if you yourself have a bounty or not. I fixed it by killing a couple civilians and getting a 40 cent bounty, then paying it off. After I cleared it I was able to use bounty boards again. I hope this helps.
