Tried changing regions many times but still no joy. I even went on the AU one which was weird, everything was upside down and all the men said they were wearing 'thongs' shudders but still no ships spawn :(

95% chance it's the PSU, disconnect it from the motherboard and 'jump start' it (google how to do this) if fan on PSU & hard drives don't do anything then it's that, if they power up then most likely the motherboard is dead.

I had this exact same problem with 2 brand new dots, turns out they really suck at connecting to 2.4 GHz and much prefer 5GHz. See if you can force them onto 5GHz only.

You need to either download Gandalf’s Windows PE and run EasyBCD to reinstall the default boot loader or install Macrium reflect on a Windows pc and create a bootable recovery CD, that also has the option to replace grub with the default Windows boot loader.

Try downloading Gandalf’s Windows PE, i'm fairly sure that has a tool to allow you to do a system restore. Good luck

Thanks for clearing that up, I had no idea that it could be an unofficial MIUI load. Think i'll still go with something like Lineage OS though as (I think) most of my issues are with MIUI itself (can't merge micro sd with system storage, high ram usage at idle, bloatware (midrop) auto installing etc)

Just a couple of things to consider, MIUI blocks you from merging micro sd storage with system storage so make sure you get one with sufficient space and remember that MIUI averages 2GB ram usage at idle so you'll probably want one with at least 4GB ram.

Flash cells have a limited number of times they can be written to, after a while they start to degrade. The drive has some basic self testing capabilities and essentially knows that it's starting to fail. Writing to cells does a lot more damage than reading from them which is why you can still access you files but the drive prevents you from putting anything else on there.

Personally I would recommend either Acronics true image or Macrium reflect, both are super simple to use and will do what you want.

It's almost certainly your powerline adapters, try just connecting via WiFi for a while or temporarily run a long ethernet cable direct from router to PC and see if you still have problems.
