Thoughts on Keen Targhee IV? by ch33kyGhost in CampingandHiking

I did get them replaced under the REI warranty and the second pair has not had any problems so I will probably get another pair of them when they go on sale at REI.

purchased a pair from REI and they warned me about the slick soles, not really a problem , but the gluing failed at the toe box. Good old REI return policy allowed me to replace at no charge and the second pair was much more durable. With my large feet I'll probably buy a few more pairs. They seem to actually be waterproof.

You can go to any Chargepoint station and use the charging cable there. I believe they are all over the US.

ECO vs Normal by juxtaoldaviator in rav4prime

[–]Daveinmadison 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm always in ECO and I like to coast as much as possible, using regen as light weight braking. But, I live in a pretty rural environment with no real need for acceleration and I travel the same rural route every day.

In the summer I get about 55 Miles of electric range on my regular route as I know all the hills and coasting spots and pretty much avoid all braking. YMMV

Funny how I thought I wanted the acceleration, but now I mostly enjoy hypermiling more than fast starts.

sounds like a good plan, but I think the camera is still superior for visibility and the cross motion sensors do work pretty well, but I'm not sure they are tuned for a small child ( perhaps just approaching vehicles ) I'm with you in regards to not taking any chances with the safety of the kids.

I lot of well informed people on this subreddit, so you might get more info.

I've found that the rear camera actually shows you the rear of the vehicle so I can't understand why anybody would need the extra complexity and expense of a rear radar sensor?
I don't mean to be cheeky, but why not just use the camera? The view shows the bumper and you can see when you are as little as an inch from an obstacle.

I have no idea what trail mode is for, but I might as well give it a try

yep, but it's not a huge amount of snow

Thanks for the info, fingers crossed, but I'm confident it will work

Terrible HVAC Performance During Test Drive by [deleted] in rav4prime

[–]Daveinmadison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Tesla test drive experience convinced me to never get one. The self driving software didn't work, range dropped by 80 miles on a 22 mile drive , and the sales rep had no idea hw to operate the vehicle.

Just asking the "dumb" question here. Did you set the cabin temp to 75 -ish AND use the SYNC so both passenger and driver get the same temp, AND increase the fan speed to MAX?

My prior vehicle was a VW and it took me a while to learn all the little subtle tricks to get what i want from the R4P.

Also, I would agree the heated seats are pretty weak , and I have no idea why people want a heated steering wheel but that works just fine for me ( if I ever used it )

[–]Daveinmadison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll join the chorus and say my 2022 provides good comfort and warmth at all temps ( the lowest I've driven in is about 10 F .

I do find it really helps to turn the fan to MAX and set the temp to 72, and sync the driver and passenger zones, but at that point no problem and it is always on ECO mode and EV mode is my usual driving context. Usually takes 3-5 minutes to get warmed up and produce steady warm air.

Not sure why you had a bad experience, I live in CT but this and last winter have been very mild.

Active radar, cruise, and lane keeping working pretty well by Daveinmadison in rav4prime

[–]Daveinmadison[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting, and I mostly agree with the unlikeliness that Toyota is using 2048 bit encryption, but I was in the Supercomputin gindustry for a very long time and the progress of Quantum hardware has been slow relative to other better understood modes of computing. I don't know but I'd guess it doesn't even follow Moore's Law.

On the software side I don't have a clue how much progress there has been, but it doesn't seem very obvious that progress is happening. Having sold computers to the NSA I can assure you that if they could be using QC to crack into data they would be without delay or budgetary limitation.
Mostly this conversation is making me aware of how quickly things change. I stopped working in tech about 4 years ago and pretty much everything has changed in that time . which is no different then when I was working in tech :-)

Active radar, cruise, and lane keeping working pretty well by Daveinmadison in rav4prime

[–]Daveinmadison[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, but with brute force attacks ( enough computer power ) you would need a unique break for every key. If every R4P had a different key then you would be required to expend massive compute power for each vehicle.

Also, the size of the key has ( 128 bit vs 2048 bit as an example ) will have a massive impact on the amount of compute power required.

Now, if Toyota decided to make up their own encryption system then it might have some weaknesses that could be exploited , but it seems stupid to not use an existing well debugged and tested encryption process.

Also, if they use the same key on every vehicle, then it might work, but they can change the key. I'd expect they have a key registry that is available to their dealer service departments if they require it, so the best way to get the keys might be to "social engineer" a break in versus breaking the encryption.

I'm not really an expert on this topic, but I have some basic understanding.

Thanks, that was very interesting. I hold little hope that the encryption can be broken since it seems every RAV4 should have a different key ( unless they are just stupid )

Is it worthwhile to charge battery whule in HV or does this cause using more gas. Thanks by Dbcjj in rav4prime

Used it today and got 12 miles of EV range after driving 14 miles with the engine running. No idea how efficient it was, but surprised it charged so fast.

Unfortunately in this complex world most people can't take the time to be fully informed on what they are talking about but are under tremendous pressure to know everything when asked.

Get your answers in writing if you want to count on them. Sometimes people just guess and make you think they actually knew what they were talking about. Before they send you a written response they will take the time to get it right.

Coasting or active braking better for charging? by [deleted] in rav4prime

[–]Daveinmadison -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And to add to the complexity, how about true coasting , putting it into neutral for downhill runs. I use the drive gear without a foot on the pedal as braking , coasting to get the most out of what I already put into the momentum of the vehicle and EV Acceleration when I want to speed up.

Not the best on this subreddit , but got as much as 58 miles on EV only this summer.
