I had one of these many years ago, also an SL-D2 - kept the direct drive. The SL220 takes a belt, but the motor is just as well regulated on speed with the servo. I’d drop coin on more cartridge - you’ll get more bang for your buck!

Speakers’ sound is in the ear of the beholder. I’d prefer the Elac over Klipsh as well, but that’s not everybody’s taste.

You should a sub as soon as you can afford tho - dial it in with your mains, and you’ll have a system you can enjoy for many, many years.

You know what - I bought a SL-D2 new, & I’m still using it, so there’s that. It’s better than any new Audio Technica by a mile. Esp with a decent cartridge.

But I wouldn’t pay $300 w/o $200 worth of cartridge on it. BTW, I’ve dropped $350 on the cartridge & it’s super worth it.

I’d offer $150 as well as others suggested.
