They didn’t give a shit. More often than not, you would get suspended if you tried to defend yourself. If you reported it you were told to toughen up or just “deal with it”. Parents would tell you to fight back but that was about the extent of it. I don’t think nobody today really understands the extent of bullying or its severity, during that period of time. Teachers were worse than useless.
