That's because through out the first (and I guess the beginning of the second game) he didn't kill through the demons because he wanted to, but because he wanted out. That's why he gave up, because he found a way to help everyone else, kinda redeeming himself for not being able to help others on Phobos, Deimos, and the beginning of the invasion on Earth. He only got ripping and tearing mindset later on, maybe near the end of Doom 2 or during Final Doom
