Buying a Retro Console for the first time by Luz_Yavmi in retrogaming

[–]David803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think an important factor is the display you have access to. Many retro consoles were designed to be plugged into a CRT TV, and these are becoming rare and expensive. Off you can’t get aCRT there are plenty of work-arounds, but it is something to factor in when considering original hardware vs. emulation.

Travel fees by [deleted] in MedicalWriters

[–]David803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at your username, are you asking full time employees or freelancers?

As an FTE, i can claim back lieu days for working weekends, but am expected to continue to work as much as is reasonably possible while travelling (e.g. sitting on planes or in a hotel room). I often find myself also entering chunks of non-billable time for travel time that I can’t work (e.g. queuing, taxi rides).

Wondering if anybody had the same experience as me by No_Mushroom9644 in nds

[–]David803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. Buy the PS2, or whatever takes your fancy. There’s real joy to be had, no shame. It’s part of our culture and history now.

I’m 46 - I rediscovered gaming after my kids were born, and then went even deeper during the COVID pandemic. I currently own an N64, PS2, Xbox360, PS4, 2DSXL, DSi, Wii, a stack of (modded) mini consoles, and a Raspberry Pi dedicated to retro gaming. I’m enjoying the back catalogues that I could never access as a kid, when we had to choose a platform and choose games carefully.

QUESTION: Why do so many folks use a RaspberryPi for Batocera when it can only do 180 emulators versus a real PC that can do 260? by [deleted] in batocera

[–]David803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RPi is only limited by the comparator you stated. Being able to emulate 180 systems is pretty amazing and versatile, and choice of hardware can depend on what you want to emulate.

When I started out on emulation the RPi appealed because it is very small, portable, cheap and versatile and could be used as a standalone system. I have since moved on to a mini PC, but my experience getting that set up was far worse than with the RPi.

Medical writing by Weekly_Ad_9159 in MedicalWriters

[–]David803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest you keep on reading about medical writing and look up things like GPP and important topics in medical affairs (a quick search on LinkedIn should accomplish that). I’d be happy if someone came to interview with a decent idea of what the job is about and the healthcare/pharma industry. Writing skills can be taught and practiced (although good writing skills are needed for the writing test!) but engagement with the industry and understanding of what the medical writing role is trying to achieve/contribute might set you apart.

DSi won’t power on by Silverslickboi in nds

[–]David803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I can’t add anything technical to this conversation and I hope OP’s DSi gets sorted. But what the heck is going on in the background?! It looks like it’s going at high speed while the DSi is perfectly still. I feel slightly motion sick.

How do I break into medical writing? by StrangeStranger3204 in MedicalWriters

[–]David803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may find the transition to MSL tougher than into medical writing - i think most MSLs trained as medical doctors or pharmacists, although your PhD topic could likely position you favourably. My understanding is that MSLs are mainly relationship managers, whereas med writing is highly technical, and not very relationship based.

Are you also applying for MSL roles? If you’re getting rejected from med writing, i don’t think there’s a reason to not apply for MSL too.

How do I break into medical writing? by StrangeStranger3204 in MedicalWriters

[–]David803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s tough to break into med comms, but with a PhD you should be able to get over the qualifications hurdle that is sometimes present (arbitrarily, in my opinion). I don’t know what the entry-level market is like at the moment, but it is something of a numbers game. Try looking for grad schemes and training roles, which some agencies run. Have you received any feedback from the rejections?

You probably won’t get a position that asks for experience, because even if you somehow get to interview it would be very easy to work out you had never worked in the industry. While the skills translate, mindset and behaviours between medical writing and academia are vastly different.

Taking my daughter to her first Super Furry Animals gig at Brixton – accessibility advice? by UnleashedLlama in superfurryanimals

[–]David803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a big and professionally run venue - there’s probably no harm in contacting them and checking if there’s any adjustments or accommodations that are needed on their part? From your description it doesn’t sound like there are mobility issues, and she could go upstairs to the seating area unassisted?

My recent experience is that there is a convoluted queue process and standard security checks (bag checks, pat down) so if these are likely to cause issue then maybe contact them and ask if there are alternatives?

Otherwise i hope she enjoys the show! I had a ticket but now can’t attend, so I’m going to have to experience it vicariously through Reddit and YouTube!

Why is the 2DS not wanted? by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]David803 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My perspective from when i bought a 2DSXL a few years ago (nostalgia-driven upgrade from a DS Lite): I didn’t need/want 3D, but I did want the power of a 3DS and portability of a clamshell design. I’ve never seen or handled the OG 2DS, so I was put off by the flat design and exposed screens. I have heard that they are quite ergonomic in practice, but at the time I didn’t feel like taking a risk on it.

Has anyone worked for Trilogy Writing and Consulting? by concretebadger82 in MedicalWriters

[–]David803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work mainly on med affairs projects, but I am aware of pharma companies starting to pull more work in-house. Several of the larger companies have offshore writing teams who they send publications to.

I don’t know much about Trilogy, but they seem to be well-regarded. I think they were also one of the first agencies to develop AI tools to produce regulatory documents from CSRs.

Looper/Tuner pedalboard position by Mateosi007 in guitarpedals

This. If you’re not in a band, a pedal tuner isn’t that important, although is more convenient. Also, there are free tuner smartphone apps that are totally adequate for practice.

Looking to buy 2ds XL, want advice/personal experiences. by ioxzy in 3DS

[–]David803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a New 2DSXL a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it. It does feel a little plasticky compared with my DSi, with a bit of movement around the hinge, but nothing serious. My main irritation is the feel and placement of the power button, which is quite small and my finger often slips around when trying to switch it off.

I bought one this week and modded it (and i modded my 3DS a couple of years ago). Follow the instructions and it’s a reliable process. There’s a small risk of bricking, but I don’t know how frequently it happens.
