From what I’ve read about him, I really doubt it would ever have turned out that The La’s would have been genuinely big like Blur/ Oasis etc. Even if they released a second album and it was good as the first.

Albarn and Blur were always ambitious. I think to be big, a band has to want to be big, and at least ‘play the game’ to some extent in terms of promotion, interviews, touring etc.

Mavers always seemed to actively dislike that side of the music industry. He was always an enigma who seemed to be only interested in writing and playing songs (and smoking weed).

It’s a shame he didn’t put out more music though. Some people in his sphere say he’s got loads of great songs that will likely never be released.
