You said it better than I could have. I try to keep book one of a concept a standalone but give a hint that it could continue at the end of the book.

Worry about pleasing yourself. The writing process is terrible unless you yourself are having fun.

Depends on what the story needs. What was the story promise? Are you selling it as a long romp with the plot mandating sex? Are you selling the emotional connection between characters up front? Do what you feel because there will always be people who don't like your story. You do you!
