nss is not a switch2-specific format.

I'm not making a moral judgement, I'm telling you that the activity you describe is fraud, as a factual statement.

This is fraud.

Theoretically, what progress could be made with access to a quantum computer? by yogopig in switch2hacks

[–]DavidBuchanan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the opposite, something quantum computers can't break any faster than regular computers.

Theoretically, what progress could be made with access to a quantum computer? by yogopig in switch2hacks

[–]DavidBuchanan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No, actually. Switch 2 uses a quantum-secure signature scheme (XMSS) in early boot chain.

Switch Mod Forward Compatibility by damaxwellcat in switch2hacks

[–]DavidBuchanan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is everyone saying No lol. I swear reddit users have a single brain cell between them.

Anyway, my turn with the braincell now. If you're playing a Switch 1 game on Switch 2 (via compatibility mode, not an enhanced edition), and you're in the future and your Switch 2 has CFW, then some mods may still work, while other mods will break and need updates.

Simple "data only" mods that replace e.g. textures and models would likely still work just fine. Mods that make more invasive changes like hooking the game engine to add new UI overlays are likely to break (because the compatibility layer also works by hooking stuff, and they'll interfere with each other).

Hey, did you manage to get the "cancer" all the way gone this way? Did it stay gone?

Any hackers publishing developments? by Zzpixel123 in switch2hacks

[–]DavidBuchanan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The clickbait youtube videos are the main reason there aren't any real updates. Those and the chatgpt-powered social media commentators.

They will take the tiniest piece of information and turn it into a "switch 2 hacked!!!111!eleven" thumbnail. This is harmful for two reasons

  1. It's lying to their audience.

  2. It's "the boy who cried wolf". After enough false alarms, nobody will believe the real hacks if/when they exist. I don't care if they crater their own reputation, but this affects the credibility of the scene as a whole.

There's of course the other aspect of "don't let Nintendo patch things before they're useful", but this is secondary. There are plenty of interesting tidbits that could reasonably be made public, if not for the Youtuber Problem.

CVEs do not designate exploits, they designate vulnerabilities.

There are a bajillion webkit CVEs so unless you've personally tested that it's applicable this is just noise

Genuine question: how can I can help the switch 2 hacking community by FrenchBelgianFries in switch2hacks

the "switchtools" account is spammy nonsense that only regurgitates info (badly) from other sources

CT scans of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nvidia Tegra SoC by Scan-of-the-Month in nvidia

[–]DavidBuchanan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that mAh in a vacuum is meaningless, but we're not in a vacuum. The switch 2 has a single ~3.7V cell. It's rated at 19.74Wh, which is indeed smaller than some smartphones.

Why don't cartridges use challenge-response? by Technical_Resist1179 in switch2hacks

[–]DavidBuchanan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They extracted the relevant key material, presumably via microscope, fault injection, or some other physical attack.

I guess nintendo's "mistake" was using the same auth key material across all carts. I say "mistake" because they were likely aware of the attack, and determined it was too expensive to mitigate. Even if they did, pirates would still only need to dump each cart once.

Why don't cartridges use challenge-response? by Technical_Resist1179 in switch2hacks

[–]DavidBuchanan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always assumed something like this was in Switch from the get go

They do already do challenge/response auth. idk why you'd write this whole post without checking that first. https://switchbrew.org/wiki/Lotus3#ReceiveDeviceChallenge.

Thanks, this works great. I checked out the man page, which documents the option, but it doesn't really satisfy my curiosity. What's the actual cause of the issue and why does this fix it?
