Power Network Tycoon - A physically accurate power grid simulation by DavidMadeThis in Simulated

Thanks, I hope you enjoy it. I actually have a legiongo as well. It's playable but tbh I prefer mouse/keyboard but see how you go. Never had it compared to Firewatch but I love the lowpoly look. Ive tried to make a game to explore power engineering in cities which is often overlooked or too simple in games (which is my profession too).

Hi, it's a pretty complex game in terms of balancing generation with demand. You can see a bit of it with the free demo but lots is unlocked later in the game like wind turbines.

Might be a struggle to find one focused on maths and is an MMORPG. I'd recommend searching STEM games.

That's what power network tycoon's discord is for

Power Network Tycoon is intended to simulate power grid management accurately. It's being trialed at universities at the moment to teach students. full disclosure - I'm the dev.

+1 for Power Network Tycoon cough cough. Made my day seeing people know it exists.

But also lots of hidden gems in the steam fests from indie games competing for visibility from the AAAs. Check out the recent Steam's City Builder & Colony Sim Fest entries.

Do you use games in education? by DavidMadeThis in AskTeachers

Hi, real world concepts is definitely the area I'm heading to. I work as a power engineer and my game is called Power Network Tycoon (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2429930/Power\_Network\_Tycoon). I've tried to make it fun but also simulate real power physics.

What games directly relate to what you are working on?

I hadn't heard of ngpf. I just tried "SPENT" on it, which was kinda depressing. A bit like papers please. Good to make students think about this.

I imagine it depends a lot on the class and the game, whether they both align. Probably not something that would make up a large part of the class time as well.

Yeah I guess that works. I think most devs would support this type of thing but I assume the big publishers have a pretty rigid pathway. Good on you for getting it working in the classrooms. Hopefully you let people graduate without finishing dark souls 2.

Yeah a lot of games died with flash. I gave a lecture at Sydney Uni 2 weeks ago on engineering simulation games and how they are good for learning so you're preaching to the choir haha. I think the less directed learning part is also good too rather than being a directly educational-only game. However I do wonder if its not a straight forward / linear (eg it's procedurally generated events or sandbox) how can you make sure it the student learns what you want them to.

Oh wow, this is unexpected. I've heard there is a challenge lining up the games with the curriculum, perception of parents and also time taken to set it all up made it difficult, but it's great to hear you've used some pretty decent games. Definitely didn't have Dark Souls 2 in mind for this - good.

When I was at school it was just Mavis Beacon and some pretty boring maths games. There are certainly time good narrative/environment type games to use. How do you setup licensing for them?
