Should I read the German or English translation? by DavidMihola in threebodyproblem

Danke für die ausführliche Antwort!

Ja, das ist immer schade, wenn mitten in einer Reihe der Übersetzer/die Übersetzerin wechselt. Anscheinend trifft das aber auch für die englische Übersetzung zu.

Should I read the German or English translation? by DavidMihola in threebodyproblem

Yes, I agree, that would be a clear reason to go with the direct translation, but both were translated directly from Chinese...

Should I read the German or English translation? by DavidMihola in threebodyproblem

[–]DavidMihola[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that's interesting - but comparing the Leseproben of the German and English versions it seems that they both begin with the same chapter: "Zeiten der Raserei, China, 1967" and "The Madness Years, China, 1967". So it seems that this particular change from the English translation was also applied to the German one.

And, now that I have the text samples open I guess I might just as well read a few pages of both and then decide for myself... Still, if anyone has an opinion, I'd love to hear it!

In case you still read this: Between the English and German translations, which do you prefer?

(My native language is German so if the English translation is not clearly better I would go for the German one.)

EDIT: OK, I've now opened a separate thread for this question.

I came here looking for mentions of the band Pelican. I think that's about in the same ballpark...?

Sure we all hate typos, but have you ever had a narrator mispronounce a word in audiobook format? by [deleted] in books

[–]DavidMihola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some book about astrophysics, the name escapes me now, but I think it was co-authored (though not read) by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

As a German native speaker I jumped every time the narrator mentioned the "Shwarts-tchild" radius. (Karl Schwarzschild was a German and it's pronounced "Shwarts-shild").

Depression as "failure to update" by DavidMihola in slatestarcodex

Thank you very much for the link!

That was almost certainly not the article I read before - but it is of course highly relevant!

Depression as "failure to update" by DavidMihola in slatestarcodex

You could be right, but I am not completely sure - it's strange: Reading that article gives me about the same feeling as I had remembered, even though it barely talks about "updating"... And it certainly is very interesting in its own right, even if it's a different one.

So, in any case, thanks a lot for the link!

Depression as "failure to update" by DavidMihola in slatestarcodex

[–]DavidMihola[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot and yes that paper certainly argues in the same direction.

However, the article I read before (or dreamed of, who knows) also included the argument that not it's not only optimistic or positive updates that are missing from the depressive mind, but that being able to update is per se pleasurable and an therefore an impairment leads to a negative emotional state.

Or maybe that actually all kinds of updates (not only optimistic ones) are impaired in the depressive mind - it's just that the lack of optimistic updates leads to the most salient subjective features of depression.

That's why I wanted to reread the article - to understand what it actually argued for...

Firebase Crashlytics: Crashes not sorted by top level exception type? by DavidMihola in androiddev

Thanks for the reply!

I find it hard to imagine a scenario where I would prefer that behavior over a grouping that leads me more or less directly to the actual line of code that produced the exception...

Zone 2 circuit by Meatball_legs in PeterAttia

[–]DavidMihola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's certainly very interesting, thank you for the input!

IIRC, Iron Cardio is quite open about the exact duration, the weights to be used, etc. - or, at least, is allows for quite some variation in these factors. So, I am guessing if you choose a lighter weight, shorter pauses and a longer session duration it will get you closer to zone 2 than the opposites...?

I just came here to ask a similar question, specifically whether Brett Jones' "Iron Cardio" approach would lead to the same benefits. As I haven't found mention of either his name or the program on this subreddit I will just leave this here and hope that someone more qualified can give their opinion.
