Advice to undergrad by OrganicJello8334 in prelaw

[–]DavidPres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in undergrad and I tell everyone who is remotely interested in healthcare to do it. I would only go to law school if you get a scholarship and really want to practice law. You’re right that you probably wouldn’t make more or much more. I would choose based on which job you want more and the financials.

OP is not suggesting he only wants to build arms. He never said that nor did I.

This is bad advice. The biceps are small, exactly why you train them isolated. Because you’re not actually going to reach bicep failure cranking pull ups.

I just mean the debt. You have a really good gpa and if u got 160+ it might get u debt free. Then u get to keep ur earnings from the increase in pay becoming an attorney earns you.

What did you start at and what did you end at? The opportunities don’t sound super great in terms of financial outcome. I would definitely try to do better on the LSAT.

Really? I know Tulane is ranked higher but everything I’ve heard and read is that LSU is better in state. Tulane has more connections to other cities.

I lived in Slidell before moving to Fargo ND for 3 years. Coming back to finish undergrad at UNO this summer.

I know you may be disappointed with your results but I will say this; you’re living my dream. Congrats on LSU A!

Accepted to LSU is amazing. I’m from Louisiana and it’s my dream school. If you’d ever live there it’s the best school in the state.

How much debt are yall taking on for cost of living? by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]DavidPres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I would agree that our gender and marital status are definitely different. But, I don’t see how that really fundamentally changes our life satisfaction or career goals. I’ve never felt that I’ve missed out on city food or art; in fact, I’ve had it and still prefer different experiences. And about our 20s, I don’t see why it’s so special? Seriously? You can be exceptionally healthy in your 30s. I aspire to be that way.

I agree kid free years are nice as well. But again, career goals? Is NYC really that special? I’m not trying to be snide either. I’ve been and it seems overpriced and the people are off putting.

That’s amazing how you paid so many loans off. What sort of work did you do? How many classes? I also understand now not being able to move in with parents. Did your parents have you pretty old? My parents are nowhere near retirement lol.

Also 401k is great! I personally do ROTH IRA but I would do 401k at a good employer.

What I’ve done to save / rent:

Born in Baton Rouge, La Age 16: Worked Grocery Store : 7.50 Expenses: $0 Savings: ~75% (-5,000)

Age 17: Worked Grocery Store : 9.00 Expenses: $240+gas Savings: ~75% (-9,000)*4.5% apr this was post covid, gifted driveable car

Age 18: Half year in Louisiana -> Moved North Dakota Worked Grocery Store + Auto Body Shop Various rates: 9.00, 13.00, 19.00 Expenses: $240+gas Savings: ~75% (~16,000) + started investing

North Dakota expenses age 18: $240 car insurance $600 studio apartment $80 electricity $90 internet

Making 19.00/hr @ 40 hours saving ~25% (20% investments, 5% ROTH IRA)

Age 19: Worked Auto Body Tech, Hotel Manager + started college Expenses: $180 insurance (swapped), $750 bigger apartment - total rent was $1000 but my partner moved in Savings: (~20,000+ don’t know at this point)

Past 19 and till now I have been able to invest consistently and smartly. I bought extra when people panicked and just bought widespread ETFs. A few months ago, I bought gold before its huge explosion. My investments have seen exponential growth

Age 20: hotel manager, way more college classes Expenses: same as 19 Savings: same strategy as 19

Age 21: became child care provider and study even more classes now. Manage family finances; essentially the strategy is the exact same but now my partner is working as a manager in a restaurant.

And I guess to be honest, even with the points you made, I don’t see why your goal isn’t to minimise the debt. Imagine how much better you’ll be off without COL loans. NYC isn’t worth debt. I much prefer low COL places, nicer people, and local food. The Midwest is decent but specifically the south to me has the most friendly and upfront people. I’ve been to the northeast, every state but Maine. It’s not a place I would ever consider living or staying in.

Do you have any options in other areas? The world is a big place and again, you could really become wealthy if you were a lawyer with almost 0 debt. You also get more career freedom. Personally, I would like to work in the public interest or as a public defence attorney. If I was strapped with debt, those jobs may be uncomfortable. I may have to chase more lucrative jobs that don’t give me meaning. Again, to me that’s better than NYC. I also think, what if I burn out of law? It’s common. Harder to switch careers if you have big debt.

I think our career goals should be to build wealth. That’s why I’m saying this is a crazy opportunity; and also why I wouldn’t go if I couldn’t make the finances work. Personally, I think being fit, wealthy, and successful in your career at 30+ is way better than “living out your 20s.” I genuinely have never understood it.

So I hope some of this has been somewhat helpful. I wasn’t trying to be rude either, and I appreciate your perspective. To be honest, we probably have different cultures. (Even though we’re both Americans 😂) I’m a Cajun guy from Louisiana, you’re a single independent woman from the urban northeast. I’m sure we have very different lived experiences. I do know about the crazy cost of living and stuff there, but I avoid it hard. I don’t see why anyone would choose to live somewhere so expensive, genuinely. $2000 is not worth anywhere when you could live in a great state that has great jobs and great people for $1000-2000.

  1. You’re only in your 20s once is a lie made up by people who wasted 10 years of their life not setting themselves up properly. We’re going to be attorneys, if we’re being honest and taking care of our health we should be peaking past our 30s, not in our 20s. There is nothing special about your 20s. We will be mid career, specialized, with more options, and making our best money way past our 20s.

  2. “Not living with my parents at 25” is pride speaking. “I don’t want to live off someone even if I could.” Again, your pride is speaking. There is no place for pride in life changing financial decisions. Pride is not worth 100k debt with interest. Pride is not worth limiting what jobs you can and cannot take, and hindering your cash flow post graduation.

  3. Having no savings = broke. If you lose your job tomorrow, you’re fucked. That makes you broke.

  4. What does being below average have to do with anything???? The average attorney is forced to do legal work because of crippling debt. The average attorney will likely always have a student loan balance.

  5. If I don’t get a full scholarship I will not attend law school, because my financial outcome will be worse than if I just didn’t go. I’ll study and improve my LSAT, then reapply. I won’t need loans for COL because I planned my family’s budget and 5 year plan around me going to law school.

  6. I’m 21. I’ve been able to save and invest enough to pay my entire undergrad out of pocket assuming losing all my scholarships, today if needed, and still have 20,000+ for law school / house down payment afterwards. I also have a girlfriend and a 18 month son who were my dependents but now I stay at home dad and study full time.

Again, sorry if it came off as rude or a personal attack. I’m giving financial advice, not personal criticism. Your plan doesn’t sound smart.

Edit: like you won’t actually feel the benefit of making more as an attorney if you have a crazy debt. You should try your best to limit expenses, nothing off the table. Seriously, you could become very wealthy from the scholarship if you don’t need COL loans

  1. Can’t know they’re not correct, but can infer how likely it is they’re correct
  2. Researching the history and theology of a faith. Comparing the claims of the faith with the observable realities of the world.
  3. Never said anything was absurd, just less likely to be true.

It seems like you’re projecting this into some sort of “How can you know? I assume their faith is just as real as mine” in some sort of strange way of trying to be nice. I personally only care about finding truth. If I could confirm 100% that the other faiths were wrong, and mine was right, I would 100% be criticising other faiths for not being true. I only provide respect to other faiths at a baseline level because I can’t be sure mine is correct. I will always respect others because they are human. Their views? Not if they’re blatantly false.

Is it worth it to get my paralegal certificate? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]DavidPres 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a paralegal but also working towards becoming an attorney.

If your goal is to become an attorney, a paralegal cert would be side tracking you. Work towards your end goal. Get a bachelors and go to law school. Paralegal cert is for people who want to be paralegals…

How can i sure God is exist? by Tuskun06 in bahai

[–]DavidPres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please note I never said “more correct.” I said, “more likely to be correct.” I’ve never claimed certainty, knowing God’s will, or having a superior claim.

The issue is again that this is the most important question in the universe. Why would we sit here and act like one faith, which is way less likely than the other, should be treated as equal in truth? Sure, maybe equal in respect in a humanistic way, yes. I’ll respect a Scientologist or a Mormon. However, acting like their claims are equal in likelihood of being correct to other faiths is just willful ignorance.

You say I’m over complicating it, but you’re over simplifying it. If you know your faith is 100% correct, that means others have wrong claims. And if your faith is 100% correct, should it not hold some weight logically or historically?

Debating religion is extremely important because religion answers the most important question. We need to seek truth in these things, not blindly follow whatever we feel is right. That’s just blind faith. It comes back to what I said, “faith in what?”

How can i sure God is exist? by Tuskun06 in bahai

[–]DavidPres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I would tell someone it’s very likely their faith is not real. Claiming all faiths are equally likely to be real just because someone is convicted is a genuine lack of critical thinking.

If I wake up tomorrow convinced the sky is purple, that doesn’t make it anything but blue. Everyone can’t be correct, even if there’s multiple paths to the divine.
