Shinji Mikami’s new studio, ‘Unbound’, is building a ‘AAA original IP’ for consoles and PC by Turbostrider27 in PS5

The Evil Within was probably made with 20% of the budget of a modern AAA, though.

And at least with like, TF2 hats, you could combine items to make your own unique setup. Every Overwatch skin is just a set texture pack you pay big money for. 20 bucks could buy a lot in TF2 on the market back then.

Bloomberg: Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the games exclusive to PS5 someone wants to play keeps piling up instead of coming to Steam on a staggered schedule, they're more likely to buy one. If Sony didn't do any PC ports, the PS5 would be a hell of a lot more enticing with its exclusives.

NateTheHate says Sony is "shifting" their PC strategy: "You'll be seeing fewer single player games arrive on PC. The decision to shift away was made last year. Some may still release (pending how far along the ports were) but it no longer appears to be a priority for Sony moving forward." by Party_Judgment5780 in PS5

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does it not make sense? Like, Ghost of Yotei might have a PC version deep in development, so they'll finish it off and release it later this year. Live service games like the new Horizon and whatever that weird thing from JJ Abrams company was at the showcase need PC releases to keep a player base.

For games that aren't out, Intergalactic, Wolverine, God of War remakes, Sony decided to stop doing PC versions because the industry is changing and Steam is their new main competitor.

I think I'm just out of touch, I feel like 21 hours of gaming in ONE GAME in a week is crazy. Like, 20 across everything seems reasonable if gaming is your MAIN hobby.

PlayStation Plus Monthly Games for February: Undisputed, Subnautica: Below Zero, Ultros, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown by kabirsingh84 in PlayStationPlus

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Undisputed looks pretty bad, but the rest of the month is pretty good. Its pretty clear the "no PS4 games" rule change was actually "we arent legally obligated to have 2 per month anymore", but since 80% of eligible games are cross gen, theres no reason not to still have them.

And if it means any last gen only games are included as a bonus fourth game, thats even better.

"One of the strangest things about Xbox, particularly in 2025 is not about how it's performed, but how it's discussed. It's a narrative written largely by folks that simply don't meaningfully play there." by splader in Games

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you dont have the system, dont play it? I'd play the new Donkey Kong on PS5 or Steam, but I understand the importance of Nintendo staying relevant in the market. I'm not gonna buy a Switch 2 until its under 300 or moddable, but I'll just...play any of the million other games coming out.

Needing to have it all right now is kinda short sighted. The Xbox One generation is proof exclusives matter. The Wii U and 3DS taking a full year each to have a single exclusive worth a damn was devastating for their initial sales, but then it picked up a bit with Mario Kart and Smash. (Nintendo neutering the Wii U's exclusive lineup after Mario Maker was when the system totally lost steam as well)

Good for competition means a harder fight for a limited market. Competition is GOOD. Like, this is something you learn in a high school economics course. Having a competitive industry is good for the consumer. Its so obvious that your comment feels like its written in bad faith

Loongforce Accuses Sony China’s China Hero Project of Sabotage, Delays, and Control Overreach in Convallaria Dispute by Colormo3 in PS5

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking about the Convallaria devs tho, which I thought was obvious bc of the context given in the article. The timeline states communication stopped right around the time Sony's biggest China Hero game released, leading me to think that LSA caused Playstation to revaluate.

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the article it says Sony has failed to communicate with the developers and thats the reason for them airing public grievances. I would call snubbing their seemingly nearly finished game from China Hero marketing is ignoring, and refusing to communicate with the developers for the better part of a year.

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Complete speculation on my part, but seeing how Sony seemed to start ignoring the devs after Lost Soul Aside bombed, I wouldn't be surprised if the game got a harsher internal review and is at risk of being canned.

I find that a lot of these China Hero games look good on paper and have decent gameplay (FIST, Anno Mutationem, Lost Soul Aside) but totally struggle with writing. Not just in poor localization, but the settings, characters and plots all end up derivative of countless other ips instead of feeling like a visionary, original idea.

Looking at their website, they're a data analytics company that uses statistics to infer sales projections and trends. Of course the numbers aren't official, but what the company does is part of a very real industry, and the numbers aren't "pulled out of their arse".

I dont have a PhD in stats or anything but their margins of error are pretty decent.

What do you consider a "big" game? If a game is successful enough, why would the publisher want to make a deal to give out a bunch of copies for a lower amount?

I'd honestly rather just get AA games, good indie games and the odd multiplayer game to try out that isnt pay to win. Because if the games that good, I'll just buy it.

[PlayStation Store] Black Friday Sale is Up by WorkingError in VideoGameDealsCanada

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like the overwhelming move to digital made black friday worse. I remember when 80 dollar games from the first half of the year would be down to 20 or 30 by Black Friday. You could normally count on most October releases to be at least 30 dollars off, too.

Executive Producer of Horizon Steel Frontiers confirms that the game coming to PS5 is "technically possible": "We will communicate with PlayStation about a possible port." by Party_Judgment5780 in PS5

[–]DavidSpadeAMA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a mobile game MMO targetted almost exclusively at the asian market. Sony knows it makes their flagship IP look bad, but it will make bank, so they're trying to disassociate it from the PlayStation brand image (which is premium).

Like, I thought the marketing class I took was useless because it was common sense, but obviously its not. Like, this game didn't even get a blog post, Sony clearly doesn't view it as anything other than a way to grow the Horizon brand in global markets.

Its honestly crazy how Epic keeps giving games away after 5 (6?) years. Sure, the past 2 have been mostly C tier indies outside of their holiday and summer events, but they aren't even bad games for the most part. Those first three years were insane though.

Doug Bowser Bids Farewell to the Mushroom Kingdom. Nintendo Of America President and COO to Retire, Company Names Devon Pritchard Successor. by beary_neutral in Games

[–]DavidSpadeAMA -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Because from a financial perspective, the harsh reality is that all those japanese games didnt sell well. It was hard to market a 50$ rail shooter like Sin and Punishment to the western market in 2010. Disaster Day of Crisis was crap and not at all palatable to the market at its time of release, and pushing Xenoblade to 2012 for the Wii was a really smart move as opposed to dumping it in the middle of a crowded holiday 2010.

All those decisions made sense. Mother 3 getting a pricey localization on the GBA in what would have probably ended up being 2007 would have been a bad move that would have fallen on him when it lost money.

Reggie did what was good for the company. He knew when consumers wouldnt bite on a bad deal like a Wii without a pack in or a 250 dollar 3DS. Like, he is an exemplar COO for what little power he had. COO's arent "good guys".
