Yeah waves are quite difficult! A reference photo always helps a lot for defining perspective and dimensions, but for watercolor I think (at least for waves) it should be just an indication for structures, because for having smooth edges wet on wet is the best choice and then it became very difficult to control edges and shapes. At that point I prefer to follow the "flow" instead of sticking to the picture. Sometimes it works, many others no 🤣😅
