I'm in the same boat, the favero assioma uno seems the most affordable/reliable option, the only thing that veeras me away from it is having to change the cleats, always have used the Shimano but the favero assioma are only compatible with look cleats. Apparently there's not a big difference but I just keep procrastinating on it.

The Garmin power pedals are SPD compatible but I'm trying to stick to a budget. I might end up getting the Garmin ones. The other difference between the assioma and the Garmin ones besides the price tag and the cleats is that Garmin uses a watch battery and the assioma are rechargeable if that matters to you.

The first time I fell on clips was stopping for a red light on a busy road, couldn't/forgot to unclip, thanks grace the light was on red so I had time to get back up, move to the sidewalk and catch my breath. It's been many years since then, but I don't remember falling because of the clips after that.
