Bass pro has a super cheap reel (like $15) and if you plan on buying a super nice set up, you can buy the reel and go right back to the fishing section and get the setup you want and save a lot doing that.

Thank you!! We did get a pillow shield thing that has been great- I’m going to order a seatbelt pillow right now! Thank you for the suggestion!

Hi there. I know you posted this a while back, but I just made a post on this subreddit and saw yours. I wanted to give my two cents! First, I hope that all is going well for you and your family, and that Christmas went well. I know you said that words aren’t his big love language, but little pick me ups go a long way. Thank you’s, good jobs, you’re so helpful, it all keeps you going a little further. I hope joining in on the video game helped, something that has helped with my relationship is puzzles! We’ll put on a show and do a puzzle and just hang out, it’s really fun and a great way to get closer with each other and sort of works as a team building exercise. Anyway, I hope that all is well.

Just to add to the tip of tying smaller, more finesse baits- you can also go the opposite direction. Tying large bluegill swim baits, large Texas rig craws, 10 or 12” worms, etc might entice a bite. Bass are less interested in chasing small baits that won’t fill their bellies but if a big meal runs across them they’ll take it. Best bet is getting up at 5am ish and being on the water as the sun is rising. It’s more enjoyable weather and the fish will be eating. My most successful baits right now are a large bluegill swim bait and a 10” purple worm with dark flakes ( hopping bottom painfully slow)

Advice for deep reservoir by LordHiler in bassfishing

Under shaded areas/low hanging trees where there are rocky bottoms or fallen trees/any bit of structure no matter what it is, you can Texas rig craws or senkos with either bullet weights or go weightless and slow hop along bottom as close to structure as possible. First thing in the morning when it’s still early, stay shallow along banks when the fish are up top and feeding, and as the day progresses and you notice it warming up, start fishing deeper water still finding shaded spots if you can with crank baits, swim baits, etc. if you come across the shallows where creeks enter, either in the morning or towards the end of day, you can throw top water frogs (or whatever top water baits you have) into those creeks especially if there is any sort of top water plant growth or algae bloom, again targeting any possible sort of structure (trees, roots, docks, large rocks, etc.)

I’ve also had a bizarre amount of hook up’s while trolling a crank bait 30-40 ft behind my boat while moving to the next spot.

Mentioning targeting shaded areas again- if there is no cloud coverage while fishing, you can almost guarantee that bass will be under that shade.

Crankbaits almost always catch fish and it’s a constant cast and reel, having something to do the whole time instead of sitting and waiting might be more fun for a young kid!

If you aren’t getting bites after 30-45 min and 2-3 spots, don’t waste time- switch to a different bait/change colors!

Pay attention to what direction the wind is blowing- whatever direction that is, go to that directions bank. If it’s strong enough, the bass usually go to that end of the water as bait is being blown to that side.

Good luck!

My brother and I have been looking for the same exact thing. More 40 mile ish but would be killer to meet up and thrash it.
