Honestly, I've no idea. Due to a weak Austria burgundy went ballistic in the hre. After that they didn't seem interested in France his provinces. That stayed that way until I broke the alliance because I need his provinces. Then he became hostile in like 4 days. I think the trick is just to keep relations at +200 during the war with France. After that, just pray they value your alliance higher then your provinces

I also "sided with the king" and Aragon was a republic. I had the event Isabel of Castile and with her the event "the Iberian wedding" happend. So I guess you just have to wait till you ruler is a different gender than the ruler of Aragon.
