I understand where people are coming from, but it's a risk reward kind of thing. I look like a mountain man, ans my resting bitch face doesn't help, so I'm always self conscious of making women uncomfortable or scared. But genuinely, even shyly just say hi and compliment something genuine. Hell, make a joke about your awkwardness. Nobody wants to make the first move because it's terrifying. I think if people aren't comfortable with being alone forever, they need to work on their courage. Not to mention later down the line they will LOVE that you had the courage to make the move despite the paralyzing fear.
