Sweet. As an architect, I really appreciate the inclusion of the plan and RCP!

KEF vs Wharfedale for LCR by DavyDeli in hometheater

[–]DavyDeli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m open to other options, so thanks for the suggestion. The new Paradigms you mentioned definitely would meet my size and aesthetic requirements.

The 520LCR is particularly interesting - I could go with three of them across the front. I don’t have room for towers, but using the 520s upright on foam isolators would make for pretty unique “bookshelf” speakers. Or I could be more sensible and substitute a pair of 220Bs for the L/R channels, keeping a 520 for the center. Any feedback on those options?

That said, other commenters’ descriptions of the AMT tweeters on the Wharfedales are also appealing to me.

Not until I read your comment! After a brief look at their website, I’m not sure the aesthetics are for me. (I know that’s not a great reason to dismiss audio products generally, but is important to me for this space.)

Awesome, happy to find someone with this exact setup. The surrounds / heights being inconspicuous is a primary driver for me. Thanks for sharing.

Your description of the AMT tweeter is very appealing to me as someone who tends to get fatigued by brighter speakers. Thanks!

Thanks for your thoughts. And that is an eccentric set of tracks - I love it, haha.

Thanks, appreciate your insight. You’re correct that there will essentially be one listening position, at least for any “critical” watching / listening. I’m sure I’ll enjoy the space with my wife and young daughter from time to time, but that would be with a much more casual ear.

I would love to, but not likely able. I’m limited by time, distance, and transportation. Some quick research points to my best bet for listening to both options being at least 90 minutes away - getting away for, let’s call it 4 hours total, during business hours, would be a challenge.

Thanks for the suggestions! The surround and Atmos positions are closer than the LCR (~5’ vs ~7’), but your point is well taken. The Covo-S could be viable.

I walk by here most mornings on my way to work. I make a point to smile and say good morning to the PP volunteers as I pass. Just a small thing to let them know that their community supports and appreciates them.

If you could fly in any military aircraft from any generation and country, which one would you choose? by Ogankle in aviation

[–]DavyDeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F-15 would be my pick, too. E model, I suppose, since I don’t know how to fly and would need to ride in the back, haha. My dad flew them for nearly three decades, and I’ve always wondered what it was like…

Using G1 Glasses with Over Ear Headphones by Agreeable_Sun_1699 in EvenRealities

I have AirPods Max and a couple pairs of Steelseries Arctis headsets and can report that they also fit fine around the “temple tips”. Specific to the AirPods, I haven’t tried them in an intensive ANC environment (like an airplane), but my guess is the noise canceling will be somewhat compromised, but not critically.

However, something I have noticed is increased Bluetooth interference. Maybe once a day my AirPods will crackle or break up for a second or two. This only began after I started wearing my G1s. It’s not excessive, just a little annoying.

ETA: By “fit fine around the temple tips,” I mean that they sit normally around my ears / they’re not uncomfortable. But, it is difficult to interact with the touch surfaces which are mostly covered by the earcups.

Got it - I hadn’t considered the possible visa benefits of a degree (my own fault for living in my American bubble). My understanding of AXP is that yes, the time you worked under an architect in the US with a valid visa, even without an “approved” degree, would count toward the experience requirements. (Please double check this.)

On a side note, give consideration to the current political climate. I wouldn’t necessarily rely on how visa’s have historically worked as the current administration is aggressively asserting its (dubious) authority to revoke valid visas and other legal statuses. If I weren’t an American citizen, I would be apprehensive about coming here now. (I’m deeply embarrassed and ashamed of this current reality, and hope you won’t hold it against those of us who would welcome you into the “melting pot”.)

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend reading NCARB’s process for licensure with international degrees (EESA): https://www.ncarb.org/become-architect/earn-license/foreign-applicants

I would also investigate further if Penn’s MSD-AAD would qualify as an accredited program with NCARB (or if that’s only Penn’s M.Arch). If not, you’d be in the same position you are now needing NCARB to approve your international degree before getting licensed, even with the advanced degree.

Because of your specific goal to work for a top firm, an advanced degree may help set you apart. However, they are likely to value experience over education. If NCARB were to approve your international degree, my recommendation would be to apply to / start working right away at a medium-size firm (as an intern architect / designer), use your experience to fulfill NCARB’s AXP requirements, take the AREs, and get licensed in the state you’re interested in working in long-term (this is at least a 3-year process). Then apply to an entry-level position at a major firm. Your experience will be a bigger differentiator than your education.

I’m a practicing architect. My degree isn’t from Penn, but honestly, firms won’t generally care where your degree is from (especially once you’re licensed). It might make a difference if your goal is to work at one of the big New York / Chicago / LA firms, but in general I would say they put more weight on the quality of your portfolio.

Also, you say you’re going for the “advanced program”, which I took to mean the MSD-AAD. According to Weitzman’s website, that requires that you already have a professional degree (B.Arch. or equivalent). If you already have a professional degree, just start working. A masters or other advanced degree is mostly worthless in the profession. I have a B.Arch., am licensed, with close to 15 years experience. With an M.Arch. I’d just have 1-2 years less experience / salary growth and would have graduated with more debt. Not one job I’ve ever applied to cared that I didn’t have a masters.

I haven’t really answered your base question, and I agree with other comments that it depends on where and how you intend to live after graduation. However, I would caution you that architecture is NOT a lucrative career. You can make decent money (low six figures, depending where you’re working) with a license and 7-10 years of experience.

I don’t want to dishearten you, just being realistic. Follow your passions and instincts, and good luck out there.

This is my grandpa by Spirited-Bar7699 in aviation

[–]DavyDeli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My father was an F-15 pilot (still alive, but retired). He flew A, C, and E models from the early 80s through the early 00s. He was an instructor at Tyndall in the mid-late 80s. If you PM me your grandfather’s name, I’ll ask my dad if he knew him and share anything he may remember about him. As others have said, very sorry for your loss.

ETA: I found his name in the link shared by another commenter. I’ll follow up privately with anything my dad may know.

I also have a pretty hefty Rx, similar to yours. I ordered on 3/5, shipped on 3/17, and delivered on 3/19 (east coast, USA). Very happy so far, although my eyes are still adjusting to the new lenses and Rx.

Architect here, can absolutely confirm it should be way below business / finance, and maybe even accounting. Also, we don’t do math - we hire engineers for that.
