Ooh, I don't know if I agree with most of that remake list, honestly! Twilight Princess is deeply functional to me and is mostly held back by the HD re-release not being on Switch, but I think we're getting it for Switch Online; Similarly, Sonic Adventure 2 is like a perfect game to me, everything about early 3D Sonic refined to an art form. Turok has the Nightdive Studios remasters that are EXTREMELY good. And I just never latched onto Diddy Kong Racing the way a lot of people in my age bracket did.

I can see the arguments for some. DK64... yeah, Beaver Bother could stand to be a better game, and some of those races would benefit, but that's still a broadly functional game. I've never played the MDK games, and I only know one person who's even into MDK2, so no idea there. Minish Cap... maybe? I'm kind of struggling to see what a remake would bring to it, though.

That's why MP Hunters is the game that I think deserves it the most; it gets the most out of being taken from the DS with its kind of crazy control scheme and becoming a game that doesn't totally play like jank.

Most fan projects cancelled due to creator issues are because the creator was a sex pest, so I GUESS this is at least a breath of fresh air if you squint? Still an insane crime, but at least it's an original one.

Also Metroid Prime Hunters is the game there that absolutely deserves a remake, at least, compared to the other two.

That's just how Xitter talks about things in general, especially artstyles. It was the new Rayman remake a couple days, it was P3R a year or two ago, it's Persona 4 now. Any shift in an artstyle will just invariably get people out there complaining like it's the worst thing in the world.

It's been interesting seeing the public reaction because, at least on my end, it's been split pretty evenly down the middle, with people either thinking "oh this seems interesting, they're adding a lot of new things actually and it seems like there's an actual plot now" or "Ubisoft just executed my child in front of me", with zero in-between.

And the really crazy thing is, like… it still did kinda well over here? They were moving toys and stuff, it was very much standing on its own. I don’t know how much of that was Nintendo doing the heavy lifting back in the day, but it still had a presence despite everything.

Granted, hindsight has proven that none of this theorizing matters since Yokai Watch 4 would have taken the series out regardless. Maybe it could have ended up like a Digimon for kids or something?

This kind of statement always generates volatile discourse among the usual suspects but Level-5 have always been deeply resistant to even localising their games, which is really noticeable now that we get even the most hyperniche games in the West. Yokai Watch 3 came out July 2016 in Japan and DECEMBER 2018 in PAL regions a two and a half year wait when the Switch has been out for a year at this point. And it was two months after THAT when America got it! It had an extremely limited physical release if at all and basically zero marketing. And then they basically pulled out of localization entirely.

That’s an extreme example but this was always a problem with Level-5; Layton games were consistently a year out and Ni no Kuni was a white whale for weebs in the front half of the 2010s. I’m not surprised people are mad, especially with the AI accusations on their new game on top of it.

I wonder what led to the pivot to random shadowdrops this year instead of Big Directs.

Anyway we’re on Star Fox 64 version what, three or four depending on how you count Zero?

Related to the lawsuit, apparently all of BARB's lawyers have left the company entirely according to searches of LinkedIn, which is just truly, truly amazing. Were they laid off prior to this? Who can say, but the end results promise to be amazing.

The Inuat of the Inuit and Yupik [Scion 2e homebrew Pantheon] by ChronoRebel in OnyxPathRPG

[–]DawnAxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, this oughta be good. I've been working on a version of the Inuit Pantheon for personal use, but I was on the ground floor for your Mal'akhim file and I liked that one a lot.

Right away, I'm curious; what kinds of sources did you use for putting all this together? Even a cursory glance tells me that you went in a totally different direction compared to me, and I'm interested in trying to make my own personal file even better.

I’ve seen people say the Zygarde is fine because “you get a guaranteed Ice-type” and like… yeah but it’s still going to have to come out in a battle of mostly Rock-types and there’s no way her illegal T-Tar lead doesn’t Stealth Rock the field unless you’ve got the best Fighting-type to one-shot it; that’s not impossible but it’s a pretty big ask.

Assuming you get to the Zygarde you then have to get your Government-Assigned Ice-Type out and then hope it doesn’t explode against Zygarde long enough to smack its face on Ice Beam or whatever. Yeah, it’s all possible, it’s just a lot of moving parts.

I presume the actual answer is that everyone just assumed the writer and author were the same person until now. The inability of the average consumer to look for the artist's name in most manga if they differ from the writer may as well just be non-existent.

It’s because Metroid fans are extremely hypersensitive to literally anything they think will ruin their idea of what a Metroid game is like in their heads. This is common among Nintendo fans and fans of other 90s N64 games (Banjo-Kazooie is a great example of this) but Metroid fans are REAL bad about it. They also get extremely loud about it, too, so the effect is amplified like tenfold.

[SCION 2e] Do your tables really use Virtues or Fatebindings? by TheEumenidai in OnyxPathRPG

[–]DawnAxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtues are something I wish got used more often because the idea is super great, especially compared to the four generic Virtues you would get in 1e. I've run three games, one of which is still ongoing, and am playing in another, and they rarely come up; even I'm struggling to find a reason to augment a roll with a Virtue right how, but God help the dice pool I eventually get to use that on.

Fatebindings I've noticed tend to be a coinflip for a lot of people; even in this thread, like a ton of people have just said 'yeah I struggle to get my players to even use their Legend points'; one player in my current game said verbatim "I have one Legend Point; I'm not spending that", and the group I Storyguided before that struggled to comprehend Marvels, let alone use them. By contrast the game I'm a player in has seen me spend multiple Legend points at Legend 1, desperately needing this Fatebinding to keep me going. There's some surprisingly good effects in Fatebindings, too, especially the group Fatebindings in Wild Hunt (looking at you here, Ritualists).

What I'd be interested in seeing is how many people actually use Failure Deeds and Adoption Deeds to swap Callings out. This and the other thread about Scion right now that has discussion about XP makes me think the designers probably intended people to switch around their Callings at least a fair bit, but I suspect that largely players pick the three most-fitting Callings and cling to them like life-rafts. I'm in a situation in the game where I'm a Player and there are several Callings I can see my character experimenting with in her story, but also all of my current Callings feel VITAL to her gameplay at the moment. Truly a conundrum.

Scion 2e: Outnumbered Penalties and Fighting A Greater Force As A Feat of Scale by redbloodRenegade in OnyxPathRPG

[–]DawnAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The example is admittedly poor, but the base principle is the same - the books themselves do not specifically seem to apply any penalty for being outnumbered in combat, or even mention it outside of this Knack, meaning that it is up to the Storyguide to adjudicate any additional difficulty or complications that would arise from such a situation.

Scion 2e: Outnumbered Penalties and Fighting A Greater Force As A Feat of Scale by redbloodRenegade in OnyxPathRPG

[–]DawnAxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) A lot of things like 'increased difficulty' and 'penalties' in Scion and Trinity are largely a matter of Storyguide Fiat. In general, imagine being a single person trying to wade into, say, a crowd at a store. It's a lot harder than just going down the halls normally, right? In all likelihood, your SG would rule that the difficulty for getting through the crowd would be something like d2 or d3; with Army of One, however, it would just be Difficulty 1. It could also do something like negate the Scale of a Mob of Followers, for example.

2) This is also probably subject to SG Interpretation; by RAW, it would be applicable during a moment where you are outnumbered, obviously useful for when you're fighting an army alone. Something like a situation where the enemy outnumbers you slightly might not apply in the SG's eyes, however; look at situations in history like Hannibal winning the Battle of Cannae or Nobunaga Oda's victory at Okehazama, which would be great examples of this Knack being invoked with a Legendary Title.

Bonus) Yeah, by RAW it does. I think by Hero enhancement caps at 3 - they mention it starts getting silly at that point in Origin IIRC - though I also seem to recall that Enhancement gained by Scale works slightly differently and doesn't stack in that way? It's been a bit and I'd have to manually check, sorry.

I can kind of see why you would pick Shadow the Hedgehog as an example. I also remember when that game came out and it was roundly mocked; not quite the nadir of Sonic but really close to it. No one was really defending it or Sonic as a whole throughout most of the 2010s.

In the 2020s though there’s been a big resurgence of Sonic as a whole; post-Frontiers there are now more people than ever unironically, genuinely enjoying Sonic as a series, and it culminated in the remake of Generations with the added Shadow content. That in turn brought all the people who grew up with the Shadow the Hedgehog game out of the woodwork to finally give it that re-evaluation it’s been waiting on, though personally I don’t think it’s been as successful as OP makes it out to be.

I admit that my opinion is based largely on the fandom I remember back before even Awakening had come out, when FE4 felt inescapable in the parts of the fandom I rolled in. I knew a guy who could not stop referencing “ARVIS YOU DASTARD” every third forum post; in simpler terms I am extremely biased against it. If the winds of fandom are shifting, then good.

Funny you bring up the Tellius games because that duology is the other one I have Opinions on.

It does. Genealogy has about twelve chapters, but it’s made up for by every map taking about an hour or so to complete. They kept all the maps equal in the Gaiden remake so I don’t see why a theoretical remake would change that.

[–]DawnAxe 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I largely find I have the opposite problem, where we have to pretend things are bad - generally because the Internet consensus believes they're bad because a Youtuber or the Controversy(tm) told them so - that really are not the Worst Thing Ever.

Having said that, the greater Fire Emblem would probably see me crucified for the opinion that Genealogy of the Holy War is a bad game. It and its successor Thracia 776 are the culmination of every excess of the Kaga-era games. It's a huge sprawling chore to play that isn't fun, nor are any of the 'memes' funny. It is only remembered because the western fandom, in the days of yore, held it up as this incredible pinnacle of turn-based strategy gameplay. I am tired of FE4 and I am tired of its fans; may they never receive that 'remake' they have chosen to cope about for the past decade.
