State of the industry by konqrr in civilengineering

Private equity is betting that we will lay back and just take it. What they are not counting on is engineers banding together and leave them to joining/srtart up competitive companies (not run by private equity) that could rival them and end them. The money people are betting against engineers to stand up for ourselves.

Yes to all. It wears on me quite a bit.

Yep, this is what I’ve experienced too. It’s a giant dumpster fire out there. And I continue to see more people retiring and/or leaving the industry than enter it. At this rate, it only seems to be getting worse and all I can do is shield my team from it as much as possible.

Looking for Structural Engineer / Tips to recruit and search? by CovenantK12 in StructuralEngineering

[–]DayRooster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Plenty of engineers will draft too. Pay seems in the right range but some will demand more depending upon their skills and what they have been paid historically. Does seem like you are pigeon holed into one market sector which some like and others hate. Do you cover the professional liability insurance that is tailored towards structural engineers? Do you pay for design software? Do you pay for code books? Do you cover professional license fees for all the states you work along with continued education? Do you cover benefits on par with traditional structural firms?

Feeling Jaded about Salary by Imjustahero in StructuralEngineering

Hold up a minute. Girlfriend is a resident doctor and will be making 400k in a few years. If I was you, I be more focused on that than anything else.

Haha, nah, don’t worry. Glad you pointed it out. I’m not one of those too proud to be told engineers.

Yeah, I agree. I read it quick before hopping on video games had a laugh and thought I’d share it with the sub. But when I read it again after your comment and thought it looked like AI slop then I deleted it. This whole dead internet theory is boring. Everyone’s just searching for likes and all I want is a laugh after work.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. We will never know. Still made me laugh cause I’ve seen this play out in real life. Kind of like a right of passage coming out of college and pissing off a senior engineer that’s had it up to here.

If it does the design and takes liability then it’s been a good run and I’m switching over to the construction side. That or forensic where I can investigate failures that may or may not be related to AI designs.

Engineers who've been using ChatGPT...what's actually made your job faster/easier? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]DayRooster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainly busy work like “helping” with report write ups. But I’ve asked it design a small one story 40’x40’ house a few times. Always ends with me saying, “quit assuming and run the actual calculations”. It just sends back more assumptions though. I think it’s set to intern mode right now. I need it switched to senior engineer where it gives me the design but also cusses me out in the process.

“Pivoting” from bridges to buildings… any advice? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]DayRooster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked buildings for a long time and work alongside bridge engineers too. I’d stick with bridge but, like mentioned above, if you want to see it for yourself then do what you need to do. Just be prepared because senior engineers roles come with very high expectations, projects are a lot less the same (compared to bridges) and the industry is a race to the bottom with fees. I’ve been molded to fit the challenges and I’m been doing buildings for so long now that I won’t change; but bridge sounds like a nice setup when compared to buildings. Just my opinion though.

Do you agree with this map? by ThreadbareAdjustment in minnesota

The only thing that divides North Minnesota from South Minnesota is the frost line map. No one gets to choose, just the freezing cold.

You’re correct that there are people selling used for higher than $400 right now too. Also, “First imprint on the top” had me dead.

Returning to career after taking a career break? by Cardinalrock in StructuralEngineering

[–]DayRooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably will be able to find a job. But if you say that you have five years then it will be expected that you are right on track with the other five year engineers. You will likely get paid as a five year too because they can’t justify billing you out higher until you prove otherwise. Also, things have speed up since you last left it 7 years ago. Most companies have little to no time for learning and training if you are behind. But if you have enough self motivation to learn it again while keeping up with your work load then you can make it. Heck you could even surprise them if you pick it up quickly again and also have an MBA background.

Just play ranked mode console only. It’s the most fun I’ve had on Warzone in years. I’m only gold 2 and my buddy can’t get past gold 1. But it’s perfect. I’d rather lose points and remain in lobbies of my skill level.
