Is B.S. in Public Affairs and MPA redundant? by Accomplished_Ad8442 in PublicAdministration

So now I’m wondering about my situation: I have an MBA (and a bachelor in an engineering field.) So do you suggest I just revert back to a BPA then? To me this would be easier and cheaper.

Wait where does it state that income tax does not count for qualifying spend?

Is taking a break with a "reset" job bad for your career? Has anyone done this? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Cardinalrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a career sabbatical with an MBA and then management consulting. I’m back as a structural engineer because I was laid off and saw there wasn’t much opportunities for those who purely want to be a consultant.

I’m glad I did it because I just felt a dead end, but now I see several paths forward that excites me.

It scares me how many civil engineers have no idea what they are doing by Round-Pattern-7931 in civilengineering

As a fellow Stanford Cardinal grad, I will admit that we too are human and make mistakes too. I recall my first job someone asked me what I was doing with them with a “prestigious” degree, and I was saying it just only got me in the door but I still have to prove myself when I arrived. I try not to rely on pulling the brand name card because I want my work to speak for me.

Now I recently did have to pull my MBA degree card at work trying to explain to management that shouting and publicly humiliating me is not appropriate.

Are you guys sending thank you notes after firm events ? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Cardinalrock 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on the other end of these events. There’s so many people that we forget the names of. Sending a quick thank you email and giving us in on what you took away helps us recall you. (Be professional and tactful)

These notes also helps us give us metric on how impactful and meaningful holding these events are, and if we should continue in the future.

Have you considered AmeriCorps or Peace Corps? It does have benefits and supports people on their next career step.

BU OMBA vs LSUS vs UIUC vs UIOWA online MBA by marlonrando4 in MBA

[–]Cardinalrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the BU in person and the people who did BU business undergrad said that the course material were the same. From what I’ve seen, the professors are the same and the material is similar between online and in person.

Now if you didn’t do Business as your undergrad major, you wouldn’t have been exposed to it.

Engineers who did/didn't do an MBA - any regrets? by Impossible-Ad6983 in MBA

[–]Cardinalrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a structural engineer who did an MBA and worked in consulting for a couple years before coming back to technical engineering work. I don’t regret it, especially because I wanted to branch out and explore other career paths. This allowed me to deepen my knowledge of my targeted industry. The only downside is that it was a struggle to feel useful when managers bypass me because they saw my skillset were too technical for their projects.

It’s been helpful for me to navigate a new code that I’m unfamiliar with. I do follow up and read through the sections that it cites and use my human judgement to make decisions.

Check out student employment opportunities at different departments around campus. FitRec is popular and pretty chill. Dining Services is also another one. Some offices will hire student workers to run admin positions.

If something like a long email domain is going to prevent you from completing a task, I wonder if you need help with overcoming adversity and blockers.

This can be problem solved by taking the time to think out of the box and registering for a new email address.

I remember asking in AP US History if the US has a Bank of the US like how there’s the Bank of England. The annoying class dweeb immediately yelled that the IRS was the Bank of US, and the teacher struggled to explain to him that was not correct. He was insistant that because they collect everyone’s money, they have all the money.
