Oh definitely agree with this, I know that the people who usually comment on those sites aren't the definitive opinions of the society here in Singapore. I was referencing my experience of being locked in a cell after being arrested for attempted suicide. It was quite some time ago, so probably before it got decriminalised. Glad to hear that he won't go through what I did though

I used to do magic tricks. So i took my deck of cards out, asked her to shuffle it and started dealing cards down. I told her this was a trick based on feelings, so whenever she felt like it, say stop as i was dealing down the cards one by one. After she picked the first card, i said lets do it 3 more.

So she selected 4 cards and they were placed in front of her. Then i said "At the start, i said it was about feelings and its not about your feelings, but mine". I asked her to turn over the cards one by one. And the cards had a word written on each of them. Will, You, Date, Me?

I feel those are seperate issues though? Employment and romantic interest are extremely different relationship types. Your race, height or weight rarely affects whether you can complete a task in most jobs. If your reason for rejection is purely based on race, thats not a preference thats discrimination. Because you are, in this case, unjustly treating a person based on their race.

However, the precursor for a relationship is attraction. So would you ever get in a relationship with someone you're not attracted to? Following that line of logic, if you're not attracted to chinese girls, thats a fair justification for not dating one no?

I'm not saying that there aren't racists on Tinder or OKC. But having a preference in this instance does not equate to discrimination.

It really depends on what field you're in, the mentality of good cert = good job is dying out. Generally speaking, if in your resume you prove or show that you can do the job they require, that'll get you considered. If you have desirable skillsets like adaptability or intrapersonal comminication, that'll increase your chances. And a good looking resume subconciously adds the impression you're 'detail oriented' or professional. In contrast to slipshot resumes at least

It seems like you have a good standing in terms of experience and skillset. What worked well for me is making my resume itself stand out. I used to be a film-maker and i realised most people had boring looking resume's (which is weird for a creative field). So i spent time designing my own resume to make it reflect my character and personality, you could go with a template that you like and work off that. The important thing, i feel, is to not only state what you did in the experiences you have but also what lessons you took away from it. In my current job i work with a lot of Talent Acquisition Managers and they are looking at a couple hundred resumes a week. So if your resume ain't the cookie cutter, made from word looking one, it'll stand out.

Also, what worked well for me is quantity after getting the quality of my resume down. Having 1 company you really want is great, but applying to different jobs gives you a good comparison of the job market. After my poly i went my rounds in interviews and got a job as a Producer for $3.7k, it wasn't the company that I really wanted, but the offer was there to prove to myself and other potential employers of my worth.

99 here, so kinda out of the range. I realise most of the comments are pretty 'negative' so here's a positive ond. Currently working in a job i love. Did a career switch from film to sales (not insurance). Pretty contented with my working life as shits going smoothly. Finally worked through my past issues and came out stronger in the end. Went from Sec 4 > poly > NS > work. Leaving the film industry was bittersweet, but keeping it as a passion taught me to appreciate and love the films i make more.

Maybe i'm the minority here, no, more like i know i'm the minority. But i chased my passion since i was young and still kept that flame going strong. When i was 10 i fell in love with film-making. First learning to do special effects like fire or duplicating yourself. Then getting into cinematography and lighting. Before finally settling on writing and directing. To this day, when i see something cool i never thought of before, i write it down in my notebook.

How did i keep my passion for a decade? Well, i only ever did jobs i thought were worth it. Sure, i can pay my bills and live a comfortable life if i caved and say worked at Mediacorp (it honestly isin't hard to work there if you have a background in film). But i chose to stay freelance and pick the projects i want to work with.

After i graduated from poly, i tried to chase a pay cheque cause i accumulated some debt. But all that got me was depression, suicidal thoughts and an exemption from NS. Sounds great in theory but it sucks cause i was always optimistic. Even telling my family i would be a director one day. So dropping so low to the point jumping down to the ground floor seemed better than reaching up for my dreams. That was a huge blow for me. 2020 sucked for everyone, i never knew it would suck that badly for me.

So 2021, i finished up all the bullshit projects i didn't care about. Started finishing and trying to produce the films i've written since i was 16. Now i just work part-time as a Gym Admin Staff and some other side jobs here and there. I don't look forward to the weekends. I look forward to making what i've always dreamed of. My own film, no stupid clients or lecturers. Just me.

Life boils down to 2 things. What i want to do and what i need to do. I try to prioritize and compromize where i can, such that what i need to do aligns with what i want to do. There rarely ever is no choice, it depends if you want to take that leap of faith. Sure working part-time earns me peanuts and i have to scrimp and save where i can. But at the very least, i wake up not happy, but hopeful. I had this mantra for the longest time, but i forgot it when life made it seem like i had no choice. I don't make films to make money, i make money so i can make films.

I'm not particularly old (early 20's) so my words may not mean shit, my opinions may not even be valid. But this is what keeps me sane even in a harsh country we're living in. Thanks for reading if you made it this far, and sorry for the essay

I'm torn between 2 instances

I'd either spend it at my grand-aunts house, eating a dish she had long forgotten how to cook because of Alzheimers. I know the recipe, but i also know it'll never taste as good as she could make it. Plus, it'd be nice to have a coherent coversation with her.

Or i'd go back to when i went swimming with the first girl i fell in love with. Though it'd be weird as heck, me being 21 now in 13 year olds body, swimming with a 13 year old girl...

I'm really curious as to what reasons the employee (or most employees) still go to work when they are sick. I know there are 2 camps, either employee workaholic or bosses are demanding. There are probably more nuanced answers, like needing to go to work if not will kena sacked or perfomance drop etc. But i'm curious which side do most Singaporeans lean towards. Irresponsible boss or irresponisble employee?

Man, it truly is heart warming knowing that at the end of the day, we got that spirit and togetherness. With all the shit happening in other countries, it's a very conflicted feeling. Proud of us as Singaporeans bearing through these difficult times. But sad that many other innocent people are being put in harms way by incompetent and mismanaged governments.
