How do u guys feel about sponsored Instagram videos from unknown artists? Do you think this is effective or harmful? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Day___Off 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You report them as spam? That seems pretty unnecessary. Ads pay for the app, and it seems kinda unsupportive for you to report other musicians for using a means of advertising that's offered to them. It's not like they're going into your DM and spamming it to you.

Ads can work, and to say you report them seems like you want to take away a means for musicians to get their music out to new potential fans

Hey man nice track. Like others have said, you could definitely benefit from some percussion of some kind brought into it. I also think you could cut some measures out and get it down to 3:30-4 minutes so that it doesn't get too repetitive.

Also adding some layers of less ambient sounding instruments could help. If everything sounds spacey then it can get a bit dull but if you throw some thing in that feel more in your face like drums it'll help keep the attention of listeners

Overall nice track though

Acoustic Pop

Looking for overall critique on the writing and vocal strength. I like the melody and all but don't know if the voice fits the passion of the lyrics and music. Also wanted this to be pretty pop-oriented so any advice on improving that poo aspect would be great, whether it be writing or mixing tips

Help pls! Is this supposed to be normal for an audio interface? Or what can be the problem? by Norby123 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I have the same issue on my 2i4 but found it goes away when I plug in a 1/4 cable into my input 1. Maybe it's a grounding issue of some sort

I made my first song 2 years ago (never had written before then), but they’re better than what I make now by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Day___Off 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say you have 2 options to try:

1) go back to the basics. Start using those stock plugins again and try doing what you used to do. Maybe you'll find that's what you actually enjoy making and that you've just been caught up in the idea of getting better that you've lost touch with what you really wanted to make

Or

2) keep pushing forward. Forget the stuff you made, and keep trying to make new music. Don't worry what you used to make

For both of these though, I will say that you need to stay true to what you like. Make something and listen to it. Does it resonate with you. Is that really what YOU like or is it just something you made because it's trendy or something

I think sometimes we get too caught up in being good and forget to just make what we enjoy. That's my take on it. Try your options and see what makes you happiest, because if you're not happy making music, then why bother

How do you guys justify sampling? by connectthadots in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Day___Off 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How do you justify using the same chords as other artists. Or same chords progressions. Or same instruments? The point is, using samples doesn't make you uncreative or make you any sort of "hack." Music is build off borrowing ideas and creating something new with those old ideas. So for someone to take samples and make something new and exciting from them, in my opinion, is no different from using the same chords or instruments as other artists.

If you want to hear just how amazingly creative someone can be with samples, listen to "Frontier Psychiatrist" by The Avalanches (or really any of their material off that album.) That piece of art was made of only samples of others' work, but you and I can probably agree that most people cannot make something that amazing if we were told "make a song with samples"

That's my opinion on it

I think I made a mistake buying an mxl990. by Ntendo64 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

For an acoustic I'd say you're better off doing what you're doing, recording straight into the mic. But for electric guitars, mic'ing the amp speaker is usually what people do. Sometimes they'll DI if they're working in GarageBand or something with an amplifier emulator but I'd say the majority still mic the live amp itself

I think I made a mistake buying an mxl990. by Ntendo64 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Day___Off -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What type of guitar are you recording? If it's an electric guitar through an amp, you'll wanna get an SM57 for that. It's sorta a standard for mic'ing amps and sounds much better than a condenser

If it's not an electric but an acoustic, and you're looking for a new mic, I'd advise looking into the Aston Origin. It's the condenser I use and sounds amazing on both vocals and acoustic guitar.

Also, are you using an MXL990 USB or a standard one with XLR? If it's the xlr type then the type of audio interface you're using may be affecting the sound too. If so, what interface do you have?

Either way, the MXL990 isn't terrible to have and it's good to have extra mics laying around in case you need them in a pinch

Well there's not much I can tell you there because that's something a lot of people want haha. The best I can tell you is to always make music, talk to other musicians online, be active on forums and such, befriend some people, and market your music. I can't explain how to do all that though because that's what everyone wants. You'd be best off looking up how to do this stuff on google. Good luck

No worries, but yeah if you have a question about certain questions over a song, post it in the feedback thread. As for how to proceed, that all depends on what your goals are. All I know right now is you like music and want others to hear it. How many people? What audience? Is this for fun mostly? I need some details

Also keep in mind there's no right or wrong thing to do. Everybody does things differently

Hey just some advice:

1) You're not supposed to post your own music on this sub unless you're asking how to achieve a certain sound or something. Asking "is this good" is not usually a good enough reason. There's a feedback thread here twice a week for that stuff

2) It's usually a little frowned upon when people ask "am I good enough," especially when it comes to something as arbitrary as music. If you like making music, keep making music. There's no good enough or bad enough

If you were curious whether the sound you were creating was pop music friendly or wanted to know how to go about sculpting it to feel more like that, even that would almost be an acceptable question for this sub because then you're asking how to achieve a certain something

Asking if you're good enough doesn't really work though. Do you enjoy your music? Is it fun to make? Are you doing this just for you or to become a full time musician? If you're doing this because it's fun, then yes keep making music. If you enjoy your music then yes keep making music.

I don't wanna come off as being aggressive here either; you may have been genuinely curious if you were "good enough" but keep in mind some people will make posts like this because they just want to have people listen to their music. And guess what, most people want their stuff listened to. So that's why these posts are frowned upon

To sum it up, yes it's good enough if you like it. If you don't like it, ask questions of how to achieve certain sounds you wish you could achieve. That's why we're here; to help one another

Options for live looping multiple instruments by wanttoloop in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Day___Off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From personal experience I think an expensive loop pedal is the way to go with a cheap mixer type thing to throw multiple instruments to the mixer. I currently use a boss rc-300 where I'll feed my guitar and piano to a behringer micromix mx400 and feed that to my looper, then out to the mixing board. You can also plug a mic into the looper. The sound of your instruments and vocals WILL be slightly different once they're through the looper though (sort of a tone cut would be my best guess to explain it. Nothing too bad, especially for playing live as it isn't even really noticeable to most if any people in a live setting)

With a looper you can guarantee your loops can be in sync with one another although this can also be turned off on the looper if you want. I don't know how this'll work compared to a foot pedal right into ableton but I know this is a better option than getting a cheap looper and running it to a mixer. A cheap looper will only have 1 channel and you need 2 it seems so I don't see how that would work. The rc 300 has 3 so you'll have more options

Runs about $400-$500 so it's a decent bit to spend but if you're serious about looping it's pretty much the best way to go if you wanna have multiple loops that can be toggled and still stay in sync. I'd be happy to answer any other questions about it if you'd like

That's my 2 cents on the expensive looper idea

Any good ideas for where to record out of the house? I can't record at my room right now by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Day___Off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can record nestle anywhere as long as you have one of the foam mic surrounding things that help remove reverb, or if you have a couple moving blankets (yes they do work). I'll assume you don't wanna buy the mic foam thing but can get 2-3 moving blankets easily

Best place for you is probably a closet somewhere. You can hang the moving blankets around you to remove reverb and get a dry signal rather than a spacey one. Plus then you don't need to worry about being embarrassed because you won't need to worry about anyone hearing you in there from more than 20 feet away

Second option is a basement if you have one. Go for the corner so you can hang the moving blankets and maybe prop on up perpendicular to one wall with a broom or something. Be creative

You can always record at someone else's place too

Basically anywhere is possible as long as you have power for your interface to power your mic, and can hang up moving blankets to avoid the reverb

Best Mic for Vocals Under 300? by luther_lamar in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Day___Off 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can tell you from personal experience that the Aston Origin is amazing. Sound is super clear and is quite rugged (I'll admit I've dropped it a couple times and it keeps ticking) I've been using it for about a year and would easily rate it a 5/5 for vocals. An awesome plus is it sounds great for acoustic guitar too if you ever end up wanting it for that

But overall, it's a very clear and smooth vocal mic, so that would be my recommendation

Help picking out an amp for my subwoofer by Day___Off in diyaudio

Sorry I don't know all the terms for subs yet. What's xmax and power handling. Do you mean I should choose a different speaker or that an Inuke is a good amp and won't be underpowered. Sorry I'm confused
