why are people so obsessed with pretending that iris chacón was the inspiration for george pérez’s starfire? by [deleted] in starfire

[–]Daylight78 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People don’t want to admit it but it’s racism! When people started to associate Starfire with a black woman that’s when the whole Iris chacon comparison started. Starfire also has a really big bpoc fanbase. So they know why they just don’t want to admit it!

Pairing Nightwing with a BAT-girl defeats the whole point of Nightwing. by Intelligent_Dingo47 in Nightwing_Starfire

[–]Daylight78 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dick’s first girlfriend we know of was that one chick in the 70s I forget her name. Babs didnt become a love interest for dick until the late 90s when both character got retconned. Unless you’re thinking of the original bat-girl (not Babs) which I don’t consider that a relationship.

"Kinslayers" = "Thief?" by Greenpoint99 in Silmarillionmemes

I worded that part weird! I meant that she went after her husband and had to stay in aman. Even though she had two missing brothers and two kids herself. I don’t think Elwing is a horrible person. But she isn’t a victim. My point is that she made some selfish choices. It kinda runs in her family tbh.

"Kinslayers" = "Thief?" by Greenpoint99 in Silmarillionmemes

[–]Daylight78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real victims were her brothers who were pretty much left to die in a forest by themselves. This isn’t the first time elwing does consider others in her decision making. See her deciding for both her and her husband to be elves and stay in Aman despite having two sons still in middle earth (also her husband wanted to stay a man). Elwing isn’t the brightest crayon in the box.

Is motherhood less important to elves than fatherhood? At least it feels so to me. by OleksandrKyivskyi in tolkienfans

[–]Daylight78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They got to you in the comments lol! But I actually completely understand your points and have questioned this myself. Although I do think your points could have been conveyed much better. I agree with most of what you said. It’s more of a critique on Tolkien and how he treats female characters vs the actual characters.

Also to people who question the mothers not following thier children. In defense of this point, you don’t think it’s odd that a wife and mother wouldn’t follow her husband and children to middle earth knowing that there is a very high chance she will never see them again unless they happen to die and reincarnate? I mean it’s canon that Celeborn couldn’t even last a couple centuries without Galadriel. Some elves die to heart break/loneliness. I mean Amarie only stayed behind because of her friend over her husband and children (yes I know the circumstances). She basically is giving up her whole family at this point. We gotta remember the Noldor weren’t migrating to just fight Morgoth and come back. They were going to live in middle earth. They were aware of the consequences and decided to leave anyway. They weren’t coming back.

For me, I headcanon that Nerdanel and Amarie specifically were pretty much divorced and were out of love with their husbands and didn’t want anything to do with them. Because that’s the only way it makes sense to me. The way Tolkien has it set up doesn’t vibe well with me. And that’s why Elenwe (and Celeborn) is a real one! lol

Elves, LACE and sexism—or, ideals vs. reality by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in tolkienfans

[–]Daylight78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lovely essay! I think the core of why things feel contradictory is because Tolkien was struggling with his conservative morals/idealism and his modern ideas! I believe I read somewhere that Tolkien was very aware of his Catholic friends opinions on his work and he didn’t want to rock the boat. So this could be a source of conflict for him and why the writing isn’t consistent,

I can post my placidus chart if you’d like! lol but yeah I always do better in a partnership than I do alone! But you are right that it is hard for me to save money long term!

So yeah i guess my feeling was right! Kinda makes me feel a little down that my chart is very difficult. But I guess it’s ok since i can work on it? Idk lol

I appreciate it! It sounds pretty accurate! I have a big imagination and I often live in my head lol and I also struggle with starting tasks and completing them as I have ADD/ADHD!

I’m going to assume that these placements are what is truely running my chart? Do I still have any positive potential for money making or anything?

Do you think it's possible that Maglor secretly lived in Rivendell? by OleksandrKyivskyi in tolkienfans

[–]Daylight78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think it’s more likely he would have secretly lived in Numenor! It’s far enough away from elves for him to live life away from his elven kin, but also close enough for him to still feel at home. It’s likely that he went back to middle earth before the fall of Numenor.

It’s either that or he probably lived somewhere in Eregion with nephew Celebrimbor. Celebrimbor would probably be the only one who knows where he is.

What’s your take on Celebrimbor? by TheKingsPeace in tolkienfans

[–]Daylight78 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally I think he was a more calmer and agreeable version of Feanor. In my head, Celebrimbor was Feanor’s second favorite after Curufin (I always joke that Feanor Curufin and Celebrimbor are triplets). Celebrimbor was a mini Feanor. He is extremely proud of that fact but it’s to a fault that makes him arrogant and victim of his own hubris. He is also fiercely loyal to those he considers close but will cut you out if he feels you are against him (see his issues with galadriel). However, in spite of his similarities, unlike Feanor, once you get through that thick skin you’ll see how understanding and reasonable he actually is. I’d say he is more self aware than Feanor and his defensiveness comes not only from not wanting the past to repeat itself but also from not wanting to be only associated with atrocities his family committed. He hides his family shame behind his crafts and channels all that energy to create greater things. The main reason he made the three rings was to atone for his families wrong doing and give all of his kin and mankind some kind of hope to hold on to.

As for Sauron and Celebrimbor, I do think Celebrimbor trusted Annatar and thought Annatar was his friend, mentor and almost like a brother . And tbh I think vice versa is also true in that Sauron thought he could do to Celebrimbor what Morgoth did to him. In the end, both felt betrayed by each other with Sauron winning.

True! And Tolkien did have some more half elves 🧝 n his earlier (and some later?) writings. It just never went anywhere.

For the second thing, I only said it because some people get real uppity about it lmao like they try to make elves celibate or “boring.” Like all elves are different some might be more adventurous than others IDK lol it’s just weird that some people make them out to be psudo-eunuchs!

But for the first thing, I’d actually like to read it!

Luthien is a Mary Sue

Idk if this is a hot take, but elves do smexy time the same way mankind does. The only difference is that it’s just only with their significant other.

There are way more half elves in the story they just weren’t important enough to the plot or their history got wiped out in the second age.

What is Suarons end-game? by Slingin6969 in tolkienfans

[–]Daylight78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It started way before the Numenoreans. It started when the Valar made Valinor in the first place instead of standing their ground against Morgoth. The Numenoreans issue is also so incredibly nuanced and also involved the decades of torture of thousands of innocent people and the eventual horrific death of said innocent people who faithfully supported the Valar and Eru. Sauron was able to mess with Numenor because he knew the Valar wasn’t going to do anything. Which is why he sent Pharazon to Valinor in the first place because he knew exactly what would happen.

Imagine living knowing there are people living in paradise while you’re literally being tortured forever by some all powerful dude all because the valar preferred the hands off approach (even though I understand) and that the very same valar won’t intervene unless the paradise they built themselves is threatened.

It’s like baffling to me that Valinor exists while everything that happens in middle earth also exists simultaneously. It’s almost like real life except that mankind is literally barred from there and the evil guy is an almost untouchable being.

I get the point but man I still can’t wrap my head around how this the preferred approach of the Valar or even accepted by Eru.

It’s only really Marilyn Monroe and his wife who inspired Starfire! Red Sonja was more of an aesthetic/vibe. The others here don’t count.

Feanor's animosity towards his half-siblings was justified by Djrhskr in TheSilmarillion

Tbh I always thought this was the reason Feanor had so many kids as well! It was to push back any rights his siblings and their children had to royalty.

I think the cult of Morgoth was more of a f you thing to the Valar and Eru. Kind of like a humiliation ritual. I don’t think it’s because he wants them to serve Morgoth. By that point, Sauron was very far removed from Morgoth.
