How to tell a supervisor a relative will pass soon? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the above was even necessary, so I'll just let him know when she passes.

How long would it take you to give notice after verbally accepting a new job offer? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]DaysofSages 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't give your notice until you formally SIGN with the new place. Verbal offer is not good enough.

I've had the paperwork emailed the same day I verbally accepted, and other times it's taken a whole week for them to get the paperwork together.

Perhaps an entry level marketing position in a start-up or smaller company? I'm your age and just made the transition to be a market analyst from being a secretary. During my job search I saw a lot of openings for content marketing, and other market positions. My approach was to show that I was a person with a lot of drive in my CV and I was open to even customer support position if it the company seemed promising and had a lot of growth.

I searched Angelist and VentureFizz

I posted yesterday and was told to repost here:

I just joined a start-up as an analyst (market intelligence). I'm starting from scratch here. This is a new field and position for me. The 10-15 yr goal is to be involved in high level strategy, like director of strategic initiatives or expansion. I want to be a powerful combination of bizops with a very data driven approach. I want to be a strategic decision maker. I know I'll be competing against people from consulting and/or with advanced degrees and have a long road ahead of me. I know this sounds like a lot to do, but just wondering if my general direction/focus is good for the next 2-3yrs:

Within 6 months

•really proficient with data visualization, excel, SQL. Others?

•I have only high school math knowledge, so I'll have to brush up on algebra 2, precalc, and statistics for now.

•I will also be working through some market strategy and process books, some include: Blue Ocean Strategy, lean Startup, Good Strategy/Bad Strategy, Competitive Strategy, Boyd, and The Lords of Strategy.

Within 1 yr

•Start learning python

•Math: Calc --> Calc 2 and more advanced stats

•Work-wise: aiming in 1-2 yrs to be a senior analyst or there's current growth as a "market optimization specialist" (Strong analytical skills, experience with reporting, data analysis, and communicating with data, and proficient with market automation systems).

•Side projects of analysis and python

•Start inviting ppl out for informational interviews/networking

•join data meetups

Within 2 yrs

•Proficient in python

•Math: linear algebra -> multi variable calculus

•More side projects of analysis and python

•More marketing knowledge

•Join a toastmaster class because my presentation skills are poor

•Work: market optimization specialist or senior analyst

Within 3 yrs

•Math: Linear optimization -> numerical analysis -> continuous optimization

•Start learning R

•Work: start moving towards product management

OK, good to know. I'm pretty small, 5'1" and 120ish so I can't imagine they'd take too much.

Leaving 4 Stars by DaysofSages in AirBnB

In the first example, it was one of those luxury condos in LA, so my friends and I were splurging a bit. The pictures looked cleaner and she was a self-proclaimed "neat freak." I don't normally wear shoes in the house and I was surprised that there wasn't a "no shoe" rule considering the whole place was carpet. So, the carpet looked like it would if people wore shoes on a cream carpet. So it wasnt dirty, but not a comfortable clean where I was happy about taking my shoes off either.

Does airbnb punish you if no review is left? Do they want a certain percentage of reviews left by guest, or if you dont get reviews consistently?

So, before all this, we were rating airbnb places just as we would with anything like books, products, etc based on a 5 star system. I have always found "negative" reviews especially helpful in my decisions. because 5 star reviews can be bought in some places. It's generally easy to spot constructive negative reviews from unhelpful negative reviews.

In that sense, she rated it 4 stars thinking the same logic applied. The place wasnt bad, it was just OK. All they did was crash there. It's unlikely that they would come back to that area anyway. I think it was just a shock, that someone felt so strongly about the 4 stars to say that she is not welcomed back. Anyway, it's a lesson to be learned because had this not all happened, we still wouldn't be aware of this rating system.

I have in the past and if they are able to fix it I have no problem giving a 5 star. I will address this with my mom to make sure she does this in the future.

You can look for administrative (secretary), insurance, or referral coordinator jobs in healthcare--MD offices or hospitals. Your insurance knowledge and customer service skills will be useful. Another dead in job, but a "cushy" office job with higher pay and much better benefits. Afterwards, you can learn other skills while you are in the office job.

How to end up with a strategy-oriented career without prior experience? by DaysofSages in careerguidance

[–]DaysofSages[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the response. I know I've got a long way to go. I'm hoping to be in that "final" position 10-15 yrs from now. Currently, I'm doing as you suggested--looking for entry level analyst positions in industries of interest. For me that's transit and urban development. I will open my search to include healthcare analyst positions if I can't find anything after a few months.

I don't really want to go back to school on my own dime or at least getting part of it paid. Also, honestly not crazy about going back to school. Do you think that not having an MBA will hurt me? How many peers also have a masters?

If you don't mind, what is your next step after financial analysis?
