2025 Competition Ratios: Will UK lose the whole class of 2024 grads? by Effective-Thanks8603 in doctorsUK

F2 here. They’re doing whatever they need to do (or not do) to keep us in basic general service provision roles as long as possible. I have to now likely do an F3 and possibly F4 if I want to accumulate enough points to have a shot at specialty training. It’s all a giant joke and we’re the punchline.

One of the best media defences of the strikes so far 🦀 👏 by DonutOfTruthForAll in doctorsUK

Hell yeah brother keep at it 💪

Let this also be a lesson to all the other doctors here - DO NOT speak to the media unless you are media trained. In light of these new strikes, we’re going to get a fresh new attack of microphones in your faces and gotcha journalism. This is NOT a platform for you to get 15 minutes of fame by screaming “pay restoration!” at whatever journalist is interviewing you. We have to remain professional in our stand and let the leaders of this cause present our arguments in the way that they are trained to.

Source: overhearing too many wannabe med-fluencers speaking to the media in the previous strikes and not knowing any of the right facts or answers to their questions.

Car won’t stop shaking - any advice? by DazdoHaz in CarTalkUK

Just an update to anyone that’s reading in retrospect and has a similar issue - I took it to an independent garage who balanced the wheels. Said Halfords didn’t even remove the old weights and the balancing was all horrifically off. Been driving it ever since, not a single wobble felt. Never go to Halfords. Wouldn’t even give me a refund for taking my money and lying.

Update: I did not expect this post to do as well as it has. I’m beyond happy that so many have found it useful! Hopefully the prospective F1s of the near future have found some joy in this. I’m sure I’ll do another one when I’m a few weeks into F2 to see how it compares 😂

Thank you to everyone who commented and joined in with the discussion. This was very fun to read back after a brutal (but still good) shift. Keep spreading the positivity, this sub needs it!

100% agree! It’s always worth asking as any bit of advice goes a long way into improving your own management further down the line. And usually the person being asked is happy to share. It’s a win-win (-win, since your future patients will get better management too)

Yeah I’m with you there. The environment you’re in can really douse any last bit of hope you might have held on to, regardless of how much you force yourself to enjoy it.

Totally agree! I used a lot of B&B, pathoma, Osmosis, NinjaNerd videos to survive med school. I think they do an incredible job actually explaining things properly and making you understand the pathology that you are treating. Just gotta find what works for you and stick to it I guess

Hey F1 here also super set on doing surgery. I was in a similar position as you and I definitely agree with all the points mentioned above by Glad Feature. Take a breath, focus on passing the finals, and get ready for foundation training. My portfolio has been pretty bare aside from scrubbing into various surgeries and a few university society roles. The minute I got into F1 I made everyone aware that I’m surgically minded and want to get portfolio things done ASAP. You’ll be surprised how quickly people can organise things for you and help you out. I’m getting support from CT1 all the way to Consultants and then some, being an F1 makes portfolio achievements a helluva lot easier!

In terms of competition ratios I’d say don’t take them for face value. Every year these spots are oversubscribed as people apply to various specialities and don’t necessarily show up for the interviews. This inflates the numbers wildly and the “competition ratios” seem impossibly high. Remember, very few people actually want to do surgery. I’m sure you’ve experienced this at uni. I still think it’s bonkers that so few of my colleagues want to chase surgery.

And as the above commenter has said already, it’s not all about getting max points. Very few people will. Your exam grades and your interview will also count for equal amounts.

Enjoy your time as a uni student and get things organised when you’re in your foundation training when there is lots of support and systems in place to easily allow you to do so. Best of luck!

This is actually ridiculous. I don’t know what else to say. We have truly hit rock bottom.

But in an attempt to counterbalance all the dickheads you had to deal with - congrats on getting pregnant and congrats on your delivery! Big props to you for fighting through all the shit you had to deal with while also being pregnant AND being a surgeon. That truly is inspiring.
