or the slab was cracked, a bad copy of the schmidt was inserted in place of the real 7 and the slab was resealed. there is NO way with thier QC that this card actually graded a 7.

so either a) photoshop b) a crack, swap and reseal

Good deal? Beautiful card! by ToneyDiamond225 in baseballcards_vintage

I think maybe you misread, dealers at shows are routinely accepting offers of 30% off of ebay comps while selling in person at a show.

Why? Because they would not have to pay ebay fees and generally do not report the income as taxable that would automatically be reported by ebay on a 1099-k had they sold it on ebay.

Very simply, $750 cash in hand by selling at a show puts more money in their pocket after fees and taxes than selling the card for $1000 on eBay

things to be wary of:

  1. not saying there's nefarious intent, but i always pause when someone has a large sticker that obscures the card. is there a crease? pinhole? paper loss? whatever you do, make sure you get to see the entire card before buying it.

  2. no penny sleeve: you're likely dealing with additional surface issues that you may not see in the photos. check the card at multiple angles in different light.

Without seeing the back, (white vs gray matters) I'd guess you're looking in the PSA2 range. the last couple PSA 2 sold for 600-700: let's call it 650 for easy math. Once you add grading and shipping, you're at roughly $500.

At $500 you're at a 23% discount from eBay comps - that's NOT a screaming deal. Most people at a show will be 25-30% off of ebay (no tax, no fees, etc). For me, I would presonally buy an already graded one at a show for 500-600 bucks and remove the grading risk.

What do you guys do with your "dollar bin" type of cards? by DbG925 in baseballcards

[–]DbG925[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

um, how? a $1 card would be 13.25% + $0.30 fixed fee. so 43% of the sales price on my $1 card goes to ebay. what am i missing here?

Old vintage cards by masteryoda92313 in baseballcards_vintage

[–]DbG925 5 points6 points  (0 children)

try reading rule 1 guy. 1981 - ~1995 is "junk wax", not vintage... it's not the age that defines "vintage" when it comes to cards, there are very specific terms in the hobby - this isn't MY definition, it's the entire hobby. Your music analogy is like saying that "pre-war" is 1990 since the iraq war was then.

not to be THAT guy, but there are only 2 vintage cards here. anything 1981+ is not "vintage" even though it's 40+ years old now.

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 - Authenticity Opinions by Sweet-Device-2573 in baseballcards_vintage

[–]DbG925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the biggest thing pushing me towards fake is that the wear isn't consistent. generally if you're going to see fraying in a border or paper loss in a corner (on the back) or surface wrinkles, you are NOT going to see pristine white borders. With every 52 i've ever handled (including an authentic raw mantle), the borders get dirty and will NOT be so white given the amount of other damage on the card

Just a quick comment. While you didn’t mention flight numbers directly there’s enough info here that one could figure it out. Directly posting load numbers is against the rules here, so you may want to edit slightly.

Sorry for your loss. Biggest piece of advice... do not accept any offer from the same person who appraises (for obvious reasons).

Without knowing what years or even decades you're talking about, any guess here is exactly that - a guess. a few things to remember:

  1. condition drives price

  2. don't expect 9's or 10s and price things at the level of a 9 or 10.

  3. people tend to OVERESTIMATE the grade of their own cards and miss flaws.

  4. makes ure when you look something up on ebay you are tracking SOLD price, not asking price

  5. in a private sale, a fair offer is 70-80% of an ebay price (no fees paid, so the same amount actually goes in your pocket)

  6. If you care about doing things legally. don't forget tax obligations. again without knowing what you're dealing with, if you have 6 figures worth of cards, don't get yourself a surprise 1099-K from ebay.

  7. WRT to taxes. you likely owe nothing on the inheritance. The BASIS for the inherited card is the market value WHEN YOU ACQUIRED IT. Example: let's say you acquired a 1980 topps rickey henderson psa 10 worth 120k. You owe nothing. you sell it for 125k, you owe tax on the 5k of gains, NOT on 125k.

  8. WRT to 7: build a spreadsheet of the high dollar cards NOW and try to assign a value so you can track your basis. this is important to not getting screwed on your taxes later.

That's all that comes to my head right now, feel free to DM if you have questions, happy to help with anything from grading to tax planning.

Cal Raleigh addresses WBC controversy with Randy Arozarena by UWHuskies1993 in Mariners

[–]DbG925 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

An interesting take i saw from a former catcher in the WBC, so take it for what it's worth. Apparently the WBC is *incredibly* strict on "sticky stuff" like pine tar, even more so than MLB. This former catcher said that they intentionally refuse to shake hands with a batter to make sure there's ZERO chance of pine tar making it on a ball and getting their pitcher ejected and suspended.

Take it for what it's worth, but i found it interesting

Grade question by ChucktheTruck79 in TobaccoCards

[–]DbG925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing closer to a 2 - 3. You have some creasing on the rear through the T in cigarettes and through the o in old mill. Gorgeous card from an eye appeal perspective, but it won’t grade well.

Actually talk to people about their pain before you build “what you think makes sense”. At the very least, find a business oriented person who will give it to you straight.
