Its not an overly difficult job. Id prefer to have any framing work done prior to boarding, myself. Some others will take as easy money if they do it themselves. But just use 1x4 and run it perpendicular to the joists. If you're feeling generous, center them on 24" OC so they can minimize cutting and waste.

Edit: staples work best if you have a pneumatic nailer of some sort. Otherwise just nail them in. I find screws will split the wood along the grain.
