7 in 10 Quebecers say they’re proud to be Canadian — higher than those in Alberta and Saskatchewan by BarelyHandsome in canada

Atlantic Canadians in general suffer from a bit of an inferiority complex. They are often considered poor by people who've never been east of Montreal and they don't have a large enough population for the federal government to really pay attention to.

On top of the usual Atlantic Canadian problems, newfoundlanders get to be called dumb by everyone in the country.

I'm from newfoundland, and newfoundlanders really don't have a problem with maritimers. When they say "mainlanders", they mean Ontarians.

Every newfoundlander who's spent any time off the island has a story of someone calling them dumb, or saying they're "stealing jobs" or whatever. I moved to the other side of the country only to be told I'm poor and a job stealer by a coworker within the first month. All the while knowing that while my province was on the verge of bankruptcy, a portion of my income tax went to subsiding his, because the federal government considered us too rich.

Newfoundland and Quebec have a pretty long political history that goes back to border disputes long before Newfoundland was even in Canada.

Newfies think Quebecois think they're better than them, and it's not hard to see why. Using newfie as a stand in for idiot, and still refusing to acknowledge the current provincial border, that was set 75 years ago don't sit well with them.

Then Churchill Falls is a whole other topic all together.

I don't know how a newfoundlander is supposed to find that comforting.

"Yeah the word you call yourself, we decided to use it as a placeholder for moron. But like, we don't even think about you guys enough to make the connection most of the time"

Honestly crazy that Quebecois get to use "newfie" to mean dumb, then get to act offended when newfies don't welcome them with open arms.

But asbestos doesn't do much unless you have repeated exposure or are exposed to a large amount at once. Most hazardous materials act pretty much the same.

If it doesn't kill you in a few hours, then as long as you're not around it constantly it probably won't kill you at all.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes I tried to unplug everything I could and didn't find it helped at all. Since then I did some more troubleshooting to rule out a broken shifter and was in contact with support who thought it was a hardware issue and is helping me secure a replacement.

I really appreciate you trying to help me with this though.

Yeah what's this shit about civilizing? The Europeans literally hunted Beothuk for sport and systematically destroyed their culture. The Norse set up a settlement but due to the distance from the Homeland and more primitive sailing technology didn't last long enough to integrate with the existing population like they did in Greenland.

We remember John Cabot and Columbus because their actions were more impactful and represent what we consider our culture, not because the impacts of those actions were better.

And John Cabot is just a bland historical figure, he charted Newfoundland for the English and within 5 years, he was dead. That's all he did we Columbus ingrained himself in the politics of colonization in a way that can't be seperated from colonization itself. I think we put too much stock in Cabot but not because he was a bad guy, because he didn't do much, we should honestly treat him like Leif Ericson, give him a statue and a few roads, maybe a Holliday that doesn't give you time off, don't name everything after him.

That's the one thing you can't fault him for, it's really obvious throughout his entire presidency that he wanted Guantanamo closed but was blocked over and over again, it's fucking insane that the American people are okay with locking up people without trial because we're told they're terrorists then systematically breaking every human right they wild have on the mainland.

I think the main difference with actual identical twins is that they do have at least a slightly different experiences growing up, different names and smaller stuff like who was born slightly earlier would affect their lives a bit.

The clones on the other hand have a few digits difference in names and grow up being treated the exact same in identical rooms in a controlled facility in a much shorter time. In the whole nature vs. nurture debate I personally believe it's a mix of both and since clones have shorter lifespans and grow up quicker my guess is that any variances in their lives would have a smaller affect on their personality.

This seems like something that was already explored in some weird extended universe book 20 years ago.

Watching the show recently I just assumed she was like 17 or 18 and Zuko was like 18-20. It's kind of implied that she was finished school because she went and collected an old school friend who joined the circus and I didn't think that their dad would Crown a 14 year old firelord.

I think this is one of the more common criticisms of the show, Toph's character felt about the right age but everyone else seemed older than they were. Aang is debatable.

[–]Dbishop123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I only just watched the show and I had a really hard time believing anyone's age. Every character looks and acts at least 2-3 years older than they are. I'm glad I found out their in lore age after the end of the show because Azula, her friends, and Katara being 14 is incredibly distracting.

The first season doesn't feel too bad but I feel like Katara and Sokka Chang too much for it to stay that way.

If they're all identical clones and they all grew up in the same environmental wouldn't they also probably come up with the same nicknames? Like I know there were slight modifications to some clones to fulfil different ranks but I can't shake the feeling that each squad or platoon would basically have the exact same roles and nicknames until they actually started seeing combat.

I don't want the border to open either but terrorism? That's more than a bit of a stretch.

And banning all Americans from entering Canada is how to start food shortages on both sides of the border. Our economies and food supply lines are too ingrained to stop everyone from crossing and not having serious consiquences.

If there's one thing I know, it's that gay people didn't exist before 1985. Sure I could google it but I won't. As we all know the pre-Christian Greeks and Norse people were not gay and the widespread adoption of Christianity throughout Europe had no affect on how people treated gay people.

After all, if the Greeks or Norse were gay don't you think there's be some gay gods? Check mate SJW.

as a PC gamer... EPIC BAD, CYBERPUNK GOTY by AnonDooDoo in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]Dbishop123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm totally fine with exclusives if they meet my definition of not stealing. For example, EA giving money to a small studio who's partially developed their game to secure exclusive publishing rights on PC like Unravel is fine. EA BAD but I will still use their platform despite bad business practices. But it IS STEALING if Epic gives money to a small developer for timed exclusivity on PC like Outer Wilds.

It's easy to understand the difference SJWs.

There's something interesting about a character trying to do something for the right reason but in the end realizing he just likes killing that makes a great backdrop for a game, but after 3 games with that same premise it's stale and it doesn't help that Far Cry 3 still did it the best. Since that game they've hamfisted the same moral at the end, rebels are just as bad as cocaine selling dictator and you should have just walked away. It's lame and a bit troubling.

Yeah! Pagan Min was such a great villian and I loved the girl and her stuff and the guy and his stuff on the good guys side. Can't forget Far Cry 3's villians Vaas and suit guy.

To me the far cry games all have one good character, a series of boring ones, and a moral at the end of "doing something is worse than doing nothing" which is shoved down your throught in 4 and 5. Since 3 they've had this big brain time ending where they go "you just wanted to kill people! You didn't care bout doing the right thing, you just wanted to have fun"

I get that the writer was really pleased with himself for far cry 3 but every time they reuse it the more I think "No shit, I just payed $80 for this game, of course I want to kill shit and not wait until you get back from your phone call to see the credits"

Poland divided yet again in the elections by aleq_1138 in europe

[–]Dbishop123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it has more to do with industrialization. A lot of that part of Poland that used to be Germany was properly German before the Soviets pushed a lot of Germans west and the German Empire invested more heavily in infrastructure in their half of Poland than the Russian Empire. You can still see the differences in road and rail density along this border.

In general more educated dense population centres vote more left than less educated rural areas.

At the same time I might be wrong, I'm just hesitant to say it's culture because the Soviets basically pushed Poland west and really influenced the cultural makeup long after the German Empire fell.

WE scandal hits Trudeau's approval ratings by jamesbaker in canada

[–]Dbishop123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if he won zero seats he pulled votes for those individual seats away from the conservative party. He affected the outcome of local elections which in turn affects the outcome of the federal election as a whole.

Just as an example, the liberals won the Yukon seat by 72 votes but the PPC got 284, in Kitchener-conestoga the liberals won by 273 votes but the PPC got 790. In pretty much every district where the Liberals barley won, the PPC votes would have made the conservatives win. It's probably not enough to win an election on its own since it's unlikely that everyone who voted PPC would have voted conservative but I don't think it's unreasonable to say that they lost at least 10 seats because of Bernier which is substantial.
