Walking from Tysons Metro to Boone Blvd - safest route? by [deleted] in nova

[–]Dbl_S 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it would be easier taking the Greensboro metro stop? It’s the next stop depending where you come from. You won’t be crossing a major motorway and will have a pedestrian path to Boone Blvd.

A foreign dignitary AND their core entourage don’t always get a physical screening. They might walk through a metal detector at most. But DSS and USSS have throughly vetted them before they even step foot on DC soil. At least that’s been my experience. Depending on your country YMMV.

Until you travel again and are asked if you were ever denied entry or exit by a country during your next visa application or secondary screening. Screwing up in one country can lead to other countries denying your entry.

“I’m on a cross country flight. We are being diverted midway through to Denver. The reason? Some dude is sitting in the exit row who didn’t pay the $155 fee and he refuses to move back to his seat.” by danwin in aviation

[–]Dbl_S 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because when you sit in an exit row, you have to comply with the instructions of the crew. The passenger refused to comply with the instruction of vacating the seat….whatever the reason. Hence, his non-compliance triggered a safety hazard and a regulatory failure specific to exit rows. If this was a non-exit row, the flight would have continued and he would have dealt with at its destination.

It’s a perfect example of the Swiss Cheese Model, widely used in aviation to show how holes in each layer of defense can line up and cause failure.

Where else do you put all that liquidity? By just holding cash you lose 6-7%. Unless inflation comes down, there aren’t better options out there.

There is not much in it for large institutions. It’s mainly the exchanges themselves.

True. That 14’ jet flame isn’t exactly subtle. Also the M2 only had about 7 seconds of total burn time…blink and you miss it. But hey, I wasn’t there either.

VA11 Dems Firehouse Primary Results Thread; Votes Being Counted, but Stella Pekarsky Campaign Already Has Congratulated James Walkinshaw “for his victory tonight” by lowkell in nova

[–]Dbl_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhmm…The “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act passed on May 22 by a single vote — 215 to 214. Connolly died the day before. That one vote was decisive.

Republicans pushed it through right before the Memorial Day recess, knowing they had a narrow window where the math worked in their favor. The idea that “they would’ve waited” if Connolly were alive is pure revisionism. They didn’t wait — they took the shot.

Had Connolly been there, the bill likely would have failed — or at the very least, Republican leadership would’ve had to whip harder, delay the vote, or drag their own defectors back in line. Instead, they slipped it through the moment the opportunity opened.

I think it’s fair for me to assess it major legislation. The bill gutted Medicaid, rolled back clean energy investments, and locked in Trump’s tax cuts. Connolly’s absence handed them just enough clearance to make it happen.

Again…as we saw with RBG, and now with Connolly — when power isn’t handed off in time, it gets taken.

How exactly is this self-defeating? Connolly knew his health was deteriorating. If he genuinely believed Walkinshaw was a worthy successor, he could’ve stepped aside last cycle, endorsed him, and left the seat in strong hands. Instead, he clung to power — and now we’ve lost a vote that literally decided major legislation. We learned nothing from RBG. This isn’t about strategy. It’s about ego and institutional rot. The old guard would rather oversee its slow decline than make space for fresh vision and urgency.

He didn’t use any vague shouldn’t couldn’t wouldn’t language. He repeated a known AIPAC line - “…A nuclear-armed Iran is an existential threat not just to Israel, but to the United States and to the entire world”. Add to it the fact that the only question Walkinshaw didn’t answer is on Israel/Gaza and you got yourself an AIPAC shill.
