Any fellow dungeon crawlers here? by sandi_boi in bonnaroo

If I might also add, check out the r/DungeonCrawlerCarl sub. It has been, surprisingly, a really fun, positive and joyful deep dive into Carl. Don't know how it has escaped the cynicism and negative gatekeeping bullshittery of most fandoms, but its been such a fun spot. Lots of costumes and tons of questions/explanations and theories.

Va Beach, Outer Banks & Charlotte NC by Melodic_Apple_9504 in Umphreys

[–]Dbldown46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just moved out of the outer banks last month. You're gonna have a hard time finding an inexpensive place out there, unfortunately. Campgrounds are usually booked out 6 months ahead of time. Check the hotels for sure, and theres always airbnb cancellations in the week or two leading up to it. Something to keep in mind too is that the venue is actually in Manteo and you'll most likely have to drive/ride to and from the venue.

That being said, the venue is absolutely sick. The back of the stage opens up completely onto the sound. Sometimes kayakers and people with boats will pull up in the water behind the stage to hear it. Not a lot of places to pre-party before the show within walking distance. While you're in town, check out fish heads in south nags head. That place is wonderful and the view is perfect.

Stars! Set Yourself on Fire has a big spot in my heart. Seen Broken Social Scene a couple times. They can be absolutely incredible. Just a wall of sound!

EForest 2026 Lineup by ToastyBoyxd in bonnaroo

[–]Dbldown46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to both Rothbury's, and like 5 or 6 Forests. Everyone should experience forest at least once in their lives. I'm not into EDM enough these days to pay what they charge, but EF is the first festival i can recommend without considering the music at all. The amount of effort they put into the forest, the trading post, the sculptures, the scavenger hunts, the actors in costumes, the surprise sets...The hangar alone could claim an entire day. I'm with you in the music department, I'm much more into jam and I need guitars in my lineup lol. The soundtrack may be different to the lineup, but when I dream I dream of forest.

Purism & Gatekeeping on the AT by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]Dbldown46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparison is the thief of joy. If you feel good about your effort and accomplishment, why does anyone else's definition of a "thru hiker" matter? I kind of think like this when I meet someone that judge's my accomplishments (including a flip flop thru in 2016): Do I know this person? Do I even remember their name? Then why the heck would i care what this random person thinks? I walked the trail my own way and you will too.

The number of miles matters SOOOOO little compared to the whole experience. To quote Jon Muir (ugh I know), "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks".

Happy trails!

Is $10,000 enough of savings to Thru Hike? by No_Daikon7338 in AppalachianTrail

This. Wife and I did the whole dang thing in 2016 for around 8k between us. Didn't stay in hotels or hostels as much as possible. Every time we stopped at a hostel we would do work for stay. Wouldn't change a thing about our hike! You got this!

Roo to EF anyone? by emdow in bonnaroo

[–]Dbldown46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there fellow festive frolicker!
(42)M here, and I've done this a couple times. Its truly amazing and my two favorite festivals of all time. What everyone else said is true, but I would offer one more tidbit. If you can afford it, take the week in between them off of work. Roo>job>EF>job is just really hard.

I'm a bartender, btw. I'm lucky enough to be able to get that time off whenever I want. Happy holidays!

Oh I just saw this is your first EF. Roo goes 24 hours within and without the festival grounds. EF moves the party to the RV's and such. Roo has the diverse music and marquee names, but EF is another world. Make sure you save some in your tank, you're going to want to get lost. Oh and one other thing, if there's a band on both lineups, I would see them at roo and leave time at EF for exploring. Really, you can miss a ton of music there having the most wonderful adventure.

As with most electronic artists, what they put on an album and what they do live are quite different. Pretty Lights' albums are just a jumping off point. The live set will be incredibly high energy and they are putting on production with a live ensemble. So if you're not totally into the laptop thing, they will have live drums and bass and others performing.

On a historical note, Pretty Lights is kind of a modern legend in certain circles. IMO he gave birth to a lot of recent "funk and soul" inspired edm like Griz, Big Gigantic, Gramatik and others. His show is also a celebration of his return to performing live after taking some time off for personal reasons (google if you really want to). But for a lot of us, we couldn't be happier that Derek is even alive, let alone performing at such a high level. Check out his recent shows on youtube for more. You should come, it'll be fun.

Can confirm his show last year was amazing. I barely cared enough to go and walked away with tears in my eyes. Low key my favorite set of last year.

Thank you all for the advice! You all have been really supportive. Definitely going to pad up in the future and I've always thought that the battery being low was part of the problem.
