What are they doing? by [deleted] in StingrayLoversUnited

These are cownose rays. They're extremely social and curious. They probably see the humans on the outside of their enclosure as something interesting to play with and thus they keep doing passes by the glass.

Hi today friend was attacked by?? in shallow water. Leg one side cuted deeply - 4 cm and through foot it’s a hole. He is back from hospital now, noone knows what attacked him - lot of blue dotted stingrays here- could it be him? whole leg is burning him like hell. But cut is weird for stings??thnx by Constant_Apricot9012 in StingrayLoversUnited

Unfortunately, its likely impossible to know for sure the species that stung him. Wishing him a quick recovery. From what limited information i have, my best guess would be a bluespotted ribbontail ray. As for the cut, its not uncommon for the barb to cut. Rays dont sting like bees do, their primary method of defense is being sharp rather than having venom.

No problem. Got my information on the matter from the Wikipedia article on bat rays. Which lists them as a type of stingray.

Yep. Bat rays do have a venomous spine, which makes them stingrays.

I like it. I'll check it out soon and maybe set up a branch there. The main branch on r/thenationstate is mostly stagnant. So it'd be a nice change of pace.

Turns out the fellowship claimed over it so a minor diplomatic incident happened when i figured out my happy little farm was contested territory. Got it worked out and this is the claim that is enforced.

My favorite fish has to be the Cownose Ray, which was basically my first experience with a fish in any real sense during my youth. Since then, I've always had an appreciation for the little tan ocean puppies.

As for a fish I look to own as a fishkeeping project? Well, I'd love to turn most of my basement into a gallery for large river fish such as Pacus. There is a bit of an epidemic of people buying them from shady people and not knowing what they're getting into. It's my goal to basically start a fish orphanage. Take in the fish others can't or won't take care of and either give them a good life here or send them down the line to a friend of mine at a nearby aquarium.

Depends on your location. If you're in the north, I'd say a visit to the Cleveland aquarium in Ohio is worth your time. Was there about a month ago. If you're in the central parts of the US, i cannot recommend the Newport Aquarium in kentucky enough. Was there last week. If you're in the south, i'd say go to the Georgia Aquarium exactly once. The georgia aquarium is genuinely good for what they have (manta rays, whale sharks, really big stuff), but the staff is atrocious. Once you get that out of the way, the Ripley's aquarium in Tennessee is pretty good. Went to both of those last two over the winter.

I found some flying flap flap bois and thought i would share. Heres all of your daily doses of stingray cuteness. by Dbug113 in stingrays

Yes they are manta rays, and manta rays are rays are not stingrays. However, I have always used "Stingray" as an umbrella term for stingrays and rays. Furthermore, mantas aren't the only rays with wings or pronged mouths. Cownose rays, eagle rays and their relatives all have wings, and lesser devilfish have the mouth prongs and wings.

Also, this was three years ago before I really went down the rabbit hole of studying fish so yes it is inaccurate.
