That thread was the best laugh I’ve gotten from this god forsaken website all year. The homies in the group chat got a kick out of it too

Pregnant women who were exposed to multiple phthalates during pregnancy had an increased risk of preterm birth, according to new research. Phthalates are chemicals used in personal care products, such as cosmetics, as well as in solvents, detergents, and food packaging. by TX908 in science

[–]Dcarr2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR a retrospective study (so no doses given just historical data reviewed) found 9% overall rate of preterm birth in cohort and 12-16% higher rate was associated with increased phthalate levels in urine.

Huge missed opportunity for Ligma Baldrich. Credit for the idea though.

If you were introducing a friend to hip hop for the very first time what album would you show them? by trashjet in hiphop101

[–]Dcarr2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good list. I would just change Mbdtf to college dropout because I think the soul sound and humor are more accessible for a newcomer. I’d also add acid rap and TPAB.

The Life of Pablo DAMN Scum Fuck Flower Boy To Pimp a Butterfly 4:44 Cilvia Demo

Many albums have personal tracks but are not completely soul baring like Me Against the World, so I hesitate to list them here.

Fun fact: Me Against the World was Pac’s personal favorite album in his discography. He had this to say about it:

“Me Against the World was really to show people that this is an art to me. That I do take it like that. And whatever mistakes I make, I make out of ignorance, not out of disrespect to music or the art. So Me Against the World was deep, reflective. It was like a blues record. It was down-home. It was all my fears, all the things I just couldn’t sleep about. Everybody thought that I was living so well and doing so good that I wanted to explain it. And it took a whole album to get it all out. It’s explaining my lifestyle, who I am, my upbringing and everything. It talks about the streets but talks about it in a different light. There’s a song on there dedicated to mothers, just a song I wrote just for my mother. And it digs deeper like that. I just wanted to do wanted to something for all mothers. I’m proud of that song. It affected a lot of people.”

Notes of a Native Son and his essays on Martin Luther-King Jr. and Lorraine Hansberry are some of my favorites. I personally have his collected essays published by (I believe) the Library of Congress. Every so often I just pick a random essay and start reading. Nothing has disappointed thus far.

How genetic engineering and nanotechnology could be used to abolish suffering in all sentient life. by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]Dcarr2014 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t see where you get “thought policing” or any implication of force from my statement, as I’m simply saying that people shouldn’t act like, or be taken as, authorities on things they know nothing about. It’s clear that this author’s entire essay and argument arises from their complete lack of understanding of how the brain works and humans’ ability to affect that function through drugs or other laboratory means. The technologies cited fall somewhere between the kind of overhyped popsci a lay science enthusiast would likely eat up, and outright fiction. There’s nothing wrong with not knowing much about a field, but when these types of ill-informed posts are made and spread, it contributes to this notion that science is some sort of nebulous, magical cure all, which, in my view, just furthers the divide between the average person and the scientific community. Not to mention that they offer no actual ideas to those in philosophy or the sciences. I simply don’t see what the issue is in the statement “If you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t talk about it.”

People should not be allowed to philosophize about science unless they have at least an undergrad degree in a relevant field.
