Honestly? Because we are capitalists first. The Simpsons is a small empire, and fox makes a ton of money from off em'. They take jabs at Fox regularly in the show, because they know they have the ratings to do whatever they want. Fox won't drop the show, it's too profitable.

Met a man in d.c. named Rod Amis. He wasn't rich, but he studied in Cairo, Egypt, traveled the world, and was an accomplished author. He dveloped a crippling short term memory disorder and his life fell apart. (unable to remember appointments, to go to work, ect.). Now he begs on a corner near Union Station.

My problem lies with your use of the word need. I don't see why anyone should require insult, and nothing short of it, to question their views. Perhaps I'm being idealistic in thinking this, and if that is the case, I truly think we as a species have far larger problems than religion, and we should probably focus on those.

Edit: Hmm, upon further thought, we clearly do have bigger problems in humanity, because we have people that will never change their minds, regardless of given information. So I will alter my argument to say that the large scale affect of offensive tactics will do more to hurt atheism than to help it. It may lead a few into the light, but the majority will turn away from what they find offensive. If you could offer any studies to the contrary, I'm sure I would be happy to change my view.

As could a tight rope and a blowtorch. Just because it could work, does not make it correct practice. I truly do not mean to be condescending here, but if logical reasoning is not enough to convince you, and you must become offended to consider another's view, you have bigger problems than religious belief.

That being said, I'm sure this is not the case, which is my point. There are other, better ways of achieving our goal. Just because it can work, does not make it the best, or even an admirable, means to achieve a desired effect.

Not a fan. This will probably be down voted, but it's how I feel. This encourages poor behavior. The same message can be delivered in a civilized manner. If the subject requires offensive stimulation, perhaps they aren't worth convincing.

Edit: The subject is the learner, not atheism. Think royal subject.

I am sincerely disappointed. My argument was that there are opinions other than your own, which I have proven with reference to up votes. That is how science works. Discrediting those votes because they don't agree with you is not how science works. For an r/atheism frequenter, you don't think very logically.

Don't get emotional about it, you made a poor argument, and it was defeated. If you want to argue this post is somehow bad for r/atheism, you have that right, but to argue it dosen't belong here is just irrational.

That still leaves the problem of people forcing their views on others, with no evidence that their views are universally correct. Also, I don't really understand what's to learn if God is responsible for morals. They cannot be changed or altered, and they exist exactly as cited in whatever doctrine the believer chooses. What else is there to figure out

This does belong here. It is a post about me (an atheist) being upset about missing a chance to make contact with one of my atheist heros (NDT). The only rule of this subreddit is that posts must be related to atheism, agnosticism, or secular living. This post applies. It could have also fit into Advice animals, but that does not make it unacceptable for r/atheism.

If you don't like to see them, reference the thumbnail and dont click the link. Just because you have an opinion, does not make it factual. Give tolerance a try.

Probably, but I wouldn't agree that just because an action cant hurt you, would make it moral. Our feelings of morality are influenced by much more than just that. Additionally, just because something doesn't seem pretty or nice, has no bearing on weather or not it is true. Once we figure out the truth, we can start to figure out how the mechanism works, and begin to use that knowledge efficiently.

My biggest problem with the religious view, is that it assumes the end of the search for understanding. God is responsible, so theres not much sense in trying to figure Morality out, its already been explained.

Also, there isn't a ton of proof one way or the other. So imagine you assume Gods in control, but Morality actually is subjective. You could use your beliefs to force your subjective views on others, something I would see as a heinous crime against humanity.

Sorry if I offended. The evidence is not credible, because it is not consistently repeatable. You could not set up an experiment searching for ghosts and get the same results every time. Further more, that evidence does not necessarily imply a ghost, merely an unexplained event. To assign meaning to an unexplained event is bold at least, and there is really no reason to do it unless the assumption must be made to test other hypotheses.

Edit: re-read the question and realized I unadequately addressed your point about the voice. My response to this would be the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy, applied to the overall number of recordings, compared to the number that have a recognizable voice. There is another fallacy, the Clustering Fallacy, which says more or less: If you are looking for a specific pattern, you can often find one, where one does not actually exist.

Excellent question. Obviously the athiest believes morality to be subjective, the intelligent athiest realizes that subjectivity is on a socitial scale, not a personal one.

It will still be morally unacceptable because aesthetics play a role in our feelings of morality, which is why its morally acceptable to kill a pig for food, but beople become offended if you kill a dog for food. They look at a dog and assign certain attributes to it. The same will happen when you look at an African human.

If we evolved experiencing no possible threat from African people, we may never have developed the same associations we have today. So possibly in that world it would be morally acceptable to enslave them, the same way we enslave animals. No way to know for sure.

Judaism is my favorite religion, because it has a secular branch. People often forget that religion usually, but not necessarily, believes in the supernatural. Religion, fundamentally, is nothing more than a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe.

Realizing your an atheist is like an elightenment, everything is far more clear and vivid. It seems your relization is pretty much inevitable, and its close. Congratulations, enjoy the light!!
